Science gear is expensive. Science gear that has to survive in space is even more expensive. What is the gain? More knowledge of the universe and how it was created. Knowledge that will be shared with scientists around the world, I might add. Ever look at how expensive the Large Hadron Collider was?
But it's a super hadron collider.
If any aliens try to invade, it'll put on it's cape fly out and kick their asses.
