You're missing something - plenty of sitcoms that I like manage this and are still funny.

In an infinite universe, all categories of sitcom exist. Somewhere there's even a weird type of sitcom with Dawn French in which is actually funny.
Also missing something - Dawn French has been in more different kinds of sitcom than most other comedians - from broad and appealing, to adult, alternative and dark.
"The Vicar Of Dibley"
"Roger & Val Have Just Got In"
"Girls On Top"
"Happy Families"
"Psychoville"
"Wild West"
"Murder Most Horrid"
"Let Them Eat Cake"
A variety there - and most have a good audience who find them funny.
