Yes or No to the AV Vote? Page 13

They'll argue that it wasn't AV that they wanted but PR.

Well, they're unlikely to ever get this close to changing the electoral system again.

I'd doubt that they'll see government again in my lifetime.

This referendum is pretty much the defining moment for the Lib Dems. If the "Yes" campaign wins, then the main thing the Lib Dems went into the coalition for will be theirs - even if you hate the Lib Dems (and who doesn't) at least they will be able to say that they did something which changed Britain.

If the "No" campaign wins, then everything they have suffered for so far will be for nothing. It will ruin the party for good.

????? Will? Future tense? Perhaps its the circles I move in but the level of outright hate for the LibDems and Clegg specifically that I have encountered indicates to me that this Party is a busted flush whatever happens on the referendum. Pity about that postal strike. If all those late votes had made it on time Huhne would have been leader and life would be very very different.

I admit the use of the future tense is odd, but like I said, for the Lib Dems, if the gamble pays off, the chances are that they will have more power in the future.

The interesting thing will be where the LibDem vote goes if the referendum is lost. Not much point voting Tory to express your anger with the LibDems for getting into bed with the Tories, and I do not think the electorate are yet ready to forgive Labour for all the mistakes they made in office. So I think we will just see low turnouts and an easy ride for the Tories.

/...an easy ride for the Tories.

Do you mean Edwina Curry?

Voted yes...can live with that

Nice! I'd vote for that.

The only reason I made the joke was cus I ain't been following the thread or watched many topical comedy shows about the AV. Basically I took a stab at a lame gag.

I tried to think of something witty and/or amusing to write on the council election ballot paper, but I couldn't get it quite right.

So, I just voted in the AV poll.

Good news!
I've fond my polling card

Even better the polling station is a short pleasant walk across the park.

Off I go

Edit
I'm back
Now what's on Telly

Watch out for vote muggers!

Watch out for vote muggers!

Is about to write something very predictable about Clegg and then thinks better of it.

Just returning to this, I'm not out for a squabble. I'll go and say something nice about the Democrats to Da Butt if I want to have an argument. What I really don't believe that they (the LibDems) do have a future. However, I'm basing that on what I know of locally. The parliamentary candidate for the LibDems has left on them and joined Labour over fees/EMA. I have a good friend who stood down as a LibDem councillor today because he felt he couldn't stand again after the sellout. And he's losing his job in the public sector cuts. It was notable that the local campaign was purely focused on local issues (Hang on that's not quite so much of an oxymoron as it seems if you let me finish.). The LibDems literature was all about cuts and the nasty, evil Tory council that is imposing the cuts. Not a whisper of the Coalition Government of which the LibDems are a part which foisted the cuts on the local authorities. That is what my friend couldn't take. This false dichotomy between what the LibDems are doing nationally and locally.

So whatever your council does that you don't agree with in the next twelve months . . keep your trap shut.

When's the result due in?
