Campus - Series 1 Page 4

Campus and Community are completely different sorts of shows, linked only by their setting. A setting which isn't that original and has been used in countless shows before.

Plus, the tone would appear to be completely different. You may as well just say that Campus was inspired by A Very Peculiar Practice.

Isn't it just. Going to give Campus a little more time but how can they do anything that would beat the nuns?

Some of the press reviews of the series already are pretty stupid. David Stubbs in The Guardian wrote that, "there's barely an ounce of plausibility in Campus." Of course there isn't - it's surrealist you idiot, it's not meant to be plausible.

You mean everything on telly isn't real? :O

I've worked at a few unis. No one would dare broadcast the truth as it's too unbelievable. Probably Campus isn't surreal enough.

I mean that Campus is not menat to be plausible depiction of what is going on at university, in the same way that Green Wing is not meant to be a plausible depiction of what is going on at hospital. Stubbs is an idiot for assuming it should be more realistic.

Shall I edit my post to show more definitively that I was having a go at the reviewer and not you Ian?

There is a difference between plausibility and realism, Ian. I think you're misinterpreting his criticism. And from what I've seen so far his description of it as a "car crash" might be fairly accurate. Although car crashes are usually over quite quickly and this lasts for about seventeen hours.

Sorry - my fault. It's my Asperger's. I have difficulty understanding these sort of situations.

And the difference is?

Always difficult when reading as opposed to hearing. As long as no offence has been taken on your side, not a problem.

I still think any uni based comedy/sitcom/comedy drama that has made it into production still fails to nail the essential hysteria, maliciousness and sheer bloody incompetence that goes on in most of these places. And that includes stuff by David Lodge, who probably has got closest to an honest depction of the horror that is existence (I refuse to use life as it isn't) within an institution of HE. And I'm not even starting on what happens for the students.

Believable does not neccesarily mean realistic, merely an environment we believe in.

I wasn't offended at all.

I think I understand. The idea of a university where odd things tend to happen is believable, but is it realistic in the world that it has made for itself?

Sort of (although I'm starting to get confused now!). What I mean is a film like The Matrix is clearly a load of old ridiculous nonsense, but they create such a vivid and clearly defined world world that we are happy to go along with whatever nonsense they throw at us.

I'm not going to tune into Campus expecting a realistic portrait of a modern British university, but while it's on I do want to believe in the world they create. I guess time will tell how succesful they've been.

In terms of creating a believable world, a review in On The Box claims it does.

The fact that Campus works at all is a testament to the bizarre world it creates; a world where being a dysfunctional madman (or woman) is totally acceptable, and the sort of behaviour that would get you slammed with a restraining order faster than you can say 'no means no' is as normal as catching a bus. Within this surreal environment you find yourself able to make concessions for some of the outlandish behaviour and things the characters say, but overall watching the show seems a little bit like watching a car crash; you want to look away, but can't. It's a patchy start for the new comedy, but there's plenty of good stuff mixed in with the bad that gives you reason to believe it'll only get better.

I think this review certainly seems to sum up the series better than The Guardian did. Namely "Green Wing, only darker and set in a uni."

Let's wait for The Chipolata Review. The only one that really matters. ;)
