Chaser and Oldboy aren't fantasy. Although the point I was really making is that there's good stuff out there if you look for it. There's more to films than just Hollywood (then again, Hollywood can still make stuff like The Social Network, Black Swan and True Grit so things aren't that bleak).
Tell us about what happened at the pub last night Chip!

Woohoo quite a night.
Quote: Griff @ April 4 2011, 11:37 PM BSTLOL I'm not sure what "it" is but I will try to refrain!
But I agree that interesting TV is always better than uninteresting TV and remakes by their very nature start at a disadvantage interest-wise. (Battlestar Galactica notwithstanding).
I generally find there's far more TV on that I'd quite like to watch than I actually have time in my life to watch. I'm quite glad now that Sky Atlantic isn't on Freeview or I'd never move from the sofa.
Merely yes Griff.
I don't actually watch a lot of TV. There is little that I will stop and sit down for at the time of broadcast unless its an en famille thing, although I do use the on demand players a lot. And I do keep reminding myself that stuff like Sky Atlantic is not representative of the general dross that is aired on US TV.
But my gripe remains. Remakes, reboots, retreads - the vast majority are not in the league of BG - and its what the producers are opting for that is bugging me. The Professionals for instance has now found a home on ITV4 where we can enjoy bubble perms and capris but the story goes that Martin Shaw blocked its tranmission for years because it wasn't his finest hour. I can't see that any feature film no matter how big the stars claimed to be attached to the project is going to be any less tedious than the series.
Suppose the only way I'm going to change this is by writing something new and ground breaking and hope that someone might want to look at it.
There are a lot of tired old ideas out there, but there again, there's a lot more space for them than there used to be, outside of cinema.
Well they're remaking Wonder Woman as a TV series. Except instead of wearing Swimsuit and Satin Tights she's in a sort of pants suit. Isn't from Themaskara and is a sort of chief exec vigilante.
For bum's sake how much harder would it be to remake her as a completely new character? I mean if you're not going to make Wonder woman why call it Wonder woman?
I mean the whole charm was the hokiness, the few mysticism and perviness. All gone to be replaced by nonsense.
I think Boston Legal's David E. Kelly is behind the new Wonder Woman so it might be quite good. Denny Crane!
Personally, I don't mind so much if an old character is reused, just so long as it's done in an interesting way. Too often an apparently new character is used to tell the same old story again.

A Tale of Two Sisters, Sympathy for Mr Vengence, Lady Vengence.
There are loads more South Korean movies on my 'to watch' list.
V must be one of the most bizarre. I mean in the 80s it was a massively budgeted, hugely influential show that reflected very real cold war paranoia. As well as leading to an outbreak of red V's spray painted in South Africa. Hokey dumb, a sort of Dynasty vs War of the Worlds. I loved it and once watched the whole miniseries back to back over a very boozy weekend.
The new one is just cheap a bit sad and makes no sense. A conspiracy thriller with 300 city sized Alien space ships?
Both BCG and Buffy are examples of TV series which hollowed out the original and created a far superior product.

My old flatmate Kim had a massive collection of South Korean cinema it is really, really cool. Kind of some how so fresh, funny, mental and also very dark.

It's an important and timeless message.
Yeh but trousers Griff, trousers ruins the whole thing.
Linda Powers only covered her legs with satin tights or as part of that rather kinky jump suit ensemble.

It's Wonder Woman, so who cares.
no it isn't!
How about remaking The Matrix. Except it's about a garden centre and Neo is the compost delivery man?
Quote: Griff @ April 5 2011, 10:32 AM BSTWonder Woman steps over the line into superhero wrongness. She's allowed to turn up in Justice League but that's all.
eh?
nb Wonderwoman was invented by a perverted psycoannalyst in the 1930s.
