i see BBC radio 7 is morphing into Radio 4 extra or something soon

i hope this won't mean more boring stuff like drama's - and less comedy stuff

There will still be qite a lot of comedy. They are removing quite a lot of the children's programming, keeping Newsjack, going to broadcast some Radio 4 comedy early (starting with Arthur Smith's Balham Bash), and are creating some new shows. The main one is What's So Funny?, a comedy discussion show hosted by Rufus Hound.

I missed that. But I did catch Act Your Age tonight. It was very odd. Roger de Courcey doing ventriloquism on the radio while talking about pissing in a dog's ear or something. And I don't know if Keith Chegwin was script editing but there were an awful lot of other people's jokes getting an airing, from Tim Vine's "I want a skip outside my house" to the Bob Monkhouse "People laughed when I said I was going to be a comedian" line, and the one about "the difference between a kangaroo and a kangaroot".

On the other hand there was some funny stuff about doing gigs in a prison.

I think they did mention it was Bob Monkhouse's joke and Dave Spikey's jail story, but I can't remember them mentioning Tim Vine.

There doesn't seem to be much in the way of radio sitcoms on Radio 4 at the moment.

In terms of sitcoms coming up, there is Fags, Mags and Bags and Beauty of Britain, but they are all in the 11.30am slot.

There's something called Turf Wars on with Katherine Parkinson, don't know if that's a sitcom?

We list it on the guide as a series of separate comedy dramas.

Sony Radio awards nominations are out and the only two radio stations that get a look in in the comedy section area are Radio 4 and Radio 2. Nothing regional.
Depressing is not the word.

What would your contenders be, K.L. ?

But there aren't any regional comedy shows are there? Bar the 'bantering' breakfast shows, obviously.

Dan

Not really comedy shows as such but I write a lot of the jokes for the links on Bristol based Jack FM, http://www.jackbristol.com/

Basically the station has no DJs (apart from the morning one, Downsy) and the rest of the day it's just music interspersed with jokes told by Paul Darrow (Avon from "Blake's Seven"!) and adverts.

You've got Avon reading your jokes out? Respect!

Thanks, I think of all the things I've done whilst involved in comedy, it's the one that's actually made my mum proud as she was a huge fan of his.

Well, bit of mean, sexy bugger on 'the Seven', so he was!

There is literally not one bit of this exchange I can reference in any way.

Come on Dan, get your geek on!

He's on. I've been trying to shake him off my back all morning...

What would your contenders be, K.L. ?

Sorry Tim. Not ignoring you. Just been out. It was more the lack of outlets for comedy on radio of which I was despairing rather than 'have you heard this brilliant local radio comedy?' I have to admit to having a soft spot for LL Files on Radio Wales as they can skewer things more accurately than some of the national shows but nothing else recent really springs to mind.
It was more that all we seem to have to squeeze onto is R2 and R4 and possibly R4+

I'd quite like The Department to get another airing sometime. The BBC never made an CD of it, which I felt was strange because virtually every other Radio4 comedy at the time ended up in the BBC Audio range.

It's a shame that E4 Radio never took off, because they looked like they were going to show a real commitment towards comedy, at least initially.

A friend of mine used to do that at another Jack FM station, it's a good gig.

There's a company called Murf Media who do a lot of 'radio prep' work supplying topical gags and sketches to FM stations via a thing called FM Jock http://www.fmjock.com/bitzterms.html

I spoke to them a couple of years ago and they supposedly liked what I sent them, we got to contract stage and then it turned out they wanted some huge amount of material every day and the money was really poor.
:(

(I know, shock horror, comedy writing gig turns out not to pay very well, who'd have thought.)

Yep, I know the one, it is/was a daily show prep material service - we used to subscribe to that at a station I used to work at.

Our breakfast team used it, so then to show he was an avid listener of the station, our mid morning presenter came in and did the exact same material hours later.

I've got this week's episode of Turf Wars called The Accidental Head in my Sky +. Have you heard or reviewed it yet? Is it much cop?

No I haven't reviewed it yet.

Down The Line was good yesterday, with the poet bloke on.

The man who'd murdered a hoodie and buried his body in the woods was genius. Even Lee Mack's non-acting acting style couldn't ruin it.
