Mock Documentary Help.

I'm about to start writing a mock documentary and I have a few questions about the format that hopefully someone can clear up for me.

When writing a talking head scene, how do you script that? Like in the scene heading, would you write in the title that they're speaking to the camera or something?

Also, I know in a sitcom you're not supposed to put any direction in the script and leave that up to a director, but in a mockumentary I can't see how you can avoide it. In The Office for example, most of the laughs come from Brent's looks into the camera and the positioning of the camera. A scene that I'll be putting in my own will rely on the camera movements (zooms and quick switches between its focus) for it to work. I feel that if I don't include some direction a lot of the comedy might not come across.

If anyone has any advice it would help a lot.

Tony.

Put as much direction as is needed to put the humour over - no more.
One way of dealing with the talking head is to put is as a parenthical, ie

KNOBHEAD:(to camera) I've always liked cheese - that's why they call me 'knob-cheese', I reckon.

Otherwise you could write it into the action:

INT: Office--Day

KNOBHEAD DELIVERS HIS LINE TO CAMERA.

KNOBHEAD: I've always liked cheese...

Just make it clear in the least clumsy way possible, that's the thing.
You don't want the formatting to get in the way of the funny.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help. And for using the word knobhead, never fails to make me laugh.

Flange. And fingering.

their my faves.

Fingering. Hah, I remember that from my teenage years. :P

But seriously... what Lazzard said

Athough... isn't mockumentary a bit of a tired, cliched format now?
The Office was years ago.

As with anything, it depends what you do with it. In America, three of their best current sitcoms are moc-docs. (Parks And Rec, The Office, Modern Family.)
