Losing a parent is something that nothing can prepare you for; I imagine it is different for everyone, depending on the nature of the relationship and the circumstances, but no-one I think gets off lightly.
When my father died I was spoke of it to a friend, a lady in her fifities; she said she had lost both parents in the past decade. She described herself to me as an orphan. Just as we never really finish growing up, we never cease to be someone's child.
Don't try to be brave, and should there be any issues left unresolved, then talk openly to someone about them, and you will get to a good place sooner.
Be gentle on yourself (you to Rocker).

I can sympathize, my grandfather died just last month too. Some people found him in his car in the back seat...we didn't even know he was missing.

A young female friend with kids has terminal cancer.
We do cope somehow, my best wishes to you and family.
