British Comedy Guide

Hello, I guess

Sorry, couldn't think of anything more original to say!

Thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm 34, live in Kent, and have got a one-year-old.

I've always been a big comedy fan, and people frequently tell me my Facebook and Twitter posts are funny. I got made redundant last year from a journalism job, and have since then been trying to scrape together a living writing and doing PR etc....
I figured it was as good a time as any to start writing some of the comedy material that has been rattling round my head for donkey's, and try to do a little each day. Am not expecting to make millions, but as I'm not doing that anyway, I figure why not give it a go.

I'm more interested in writing to be honest, although performance is something I have done at workshops, and have been told I'm good at, I'm not really confident enough in it. But maybe one day.

By "sheer coincidence" my brother has also started on his stand up career at the very same time, he's already done a couple of gigs.
But we're not close and he'd probably rather cut his own head off than acknowledge one of my jokes is funny...! It does however mean that if I now start doing stand up in our little colloquial backwater, I'm basically surfing on his coat tails, and I don't want to do that.

Sorry, have rambled on a bit - am really looking for feedback, ideas, collaborations, opportunities......!

Say hi if you want to - or avoid me if you think I type too much!

Hello :)

(Are you a boy of a girl? Not that it matters)

Hello there

I'm a girl! Just realised I wrote all that and forgot to mention that bit! Hello to you too!

I think your name is sufficiently girly for us to have made a decent guess!

Hello, by the way.

Howdy!

Yo.

You're right, zooo, although I might just be "in touch with my feminine side....!"

Hello there Wave

Hello!

Hi there Posiekins, welcome aboard. :)

Howdy Doody!

Hello and welcome Wave

What sort of comedy do you like? Favourite sitcoms, other shows, your influences?

Def.

Hi Def (and everyone else!)

I like loads of different types of comedy, like most people on here, probably. I like sitcoms like Not Going Out, Miranda, The IT Crowd, Lead Balloon and Outnumbered.
I like Blackadder, Black Books, Gavin and Stacey, Alan Partridge in all his variations, and things like Armstrong & Miller and The Fast Show.
I also like American stuff, Friends and Frasier are all time classics and I absolutely LOVED Arrested Development!
Am looking for some recommendations for new stuff to discover, anyone got any tips?

In terms of influences, I'm not really sure who I admire the most - being female, I do get a little bit fed up with female comedians whose act either consists of "aren't men crap?" or very specific references to race or religion. I think it's got its place but there are so many doing that that it gets a bit samey.

I prefer quick, witty stuff, Tim Vine and Stewart Francis are both comedy geniuses IMHO, so people like that, I guess.

Oh, and I forgot panel shows like QI, The Now Show (is that panel, I guess so?), HIGNFY, Buzzcocks etc!

I'm disappointed :(
