British Comedy Guide

Would you call this comedy?

I've just got myself a gig on radio where I'm hosting a three hour show each weekday - Vectis Radio.

The show is a mish mash of things including an Agony Uncle spot mainly because I worked alongside Jeremy Kyle for much of his radio career and actually enjoyed answering peoples problems aside from the fact that I think I became pretty good at it in the end!

Anyhow my question to the comedy buffs on this site is simple....

A large selection of the prank calls I've made and am now playing out on air reside here: http://calderjon.podomatic.com/ any comments on them or even ideas for other calls would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

Calder Jon

I listened to the beginning of Santa, for me the guy was to happy to play along don't think it was your fault no ones going to take that one seriously, the accupunture one had more legs in it but he didnt want to play, the human bait one I would have prefered it if you offered suggestions rather than come straight out with ive got a body do you want it, I think that had potential as the guy was up for it, sinster rather than cheeky chappy off the radio.

My opinion only and im commenting from the POV of driving and listening to you on the radio.

What you need is one of the comedy intellectual heavyweights that float about the forums to chip in.

Best wishes

I listened altheway down to, and including, the Museum of Farts. Didn't do much
for me I'm afraid. The prankster-caller doesn't really work if the party on the
other end lets you down. And this was most evident in the "Museum Ofarts".
The english-crippled telephonist killed your effart stone dead. Could have been
very funny with a better stooge.
You might be good at what you do - BUT you need to do it with quality collaboraters -
not the duffish stuff you invited us to listen to.
Welcome aboard - keep pranking!

Thank you so much for your replies. These are all impromptu and live calls which were thought about for about thirty seconds, I wonder if I could do better with some kind of plan!

Its so refreshing to have frank opinions though. For years I've really struggled with people sayng I'm great at this that or the other when I've secretly longed for exactly the opposite!

I'm pretty much incapable of judging myself in terms of performance on air or on these calls although some, The Lion Enclosure for example and perhaps The Jammy Git one do make me chuckle when I listen back.

Your comments on the others are spot on and have given me a completely new perspective.

These things were only ever meant to be chucked in once an hour or so during a show - I may well look into planning more when I come to trying again.

Its possibly a marmite thing as the calls are very well recieved when broadcast and also made live on a Sunday show I do on a very small radio station (just 20 listeners). Although I'm ultra aware that people will often say they love what you do to spare your feelings!

Tough one isnt it but, the first hurdle for me, asking a wider audience, you guys, to comment is out of the way and I feel it was a wise move!

Thanks again!

I will be back ;)

Why don't you do the calls before hand and they play them on the show? Do the calls NEED to be live? I'm sure lots of radio shows prerecord their prank calls.

The calls in my podcast collection were recorded live on a small station with very few listeners and I'm now playing them out on a larger station.

I think I need to plan more, I'm very quick on my feet and I feel I react well to the callers but I need to pre-empt them more as well as second guess their replies!

Like everything in life, it seems to be a case of planning! As I said above, even being so hyper critical of myself and close up to this, I do like one or two of the calls but mainly the short ones!
