That type of thing is far too soft and sparkly for me. I'm more into what some people call "Deep Funk", most of which was made in the late '60s and early '70s.

I know where you're coming from. Though I prefer 80s funk, by and large, so a good synth, xylophone and echo always completes funk for me, as well as the "Hard Funk" of Jesse Johnson's daKRASH and Slave. A matter of taste, but all good and harmless!
The The - Infected. Matt Johnson is a genius who never enjoyed the popularity he deserved.

I recently discovered this fascinating website called whosampled.com which not only gives you the details of almost every song that's ever used samples, or ever been sampled, but it also lets you play the songs, telling you exactly where the samples appear. It's amazing to find out just how many samples are used in some song, and just how random some of the samples are.
Here's the page highlighting the Beastie Boys song 'Hey Ladies', from their 'Paul's Boutique' album, which was Produced by a duo called The Dust Brothers, who also produced Beck's first album, as well as Tone Loc's first album. Incredibly, this song was constructed using samples from a whopping 16 songs, including James Brown, Kool and the Gang, The Commodores, The Bar-Kays, Cameo, Zapp, The P-Funk All-Stars, and even '70s Glam-Rockers The Sweet! You can hear the samples by clicking on each of the songs listed: http://www.whosampled.com/sample/view/21550/Beastie%20Boys-Hey%20Ladies_world's%20supreme%20Team-Hey%20DJ/
Hey, Ladies! Get funky!
One of my favourite BB songs.
Arctic Monkeys have popped a new song on their website. Don't think it's a new single or anything, but it's a fun stomper:
