Bleak's radio to the bone, so it's hard to imagine this working that well, except maybe as animation.

I've been thinking hard about this... they'll have to cut some of the more surreal stuff, but it could work quite well in a visual format. I'd quite like to see Anthony Head laughing maniacally; James Bachman acting stupid; and Tom Allen being all prim and proper.

Tom Wrigglesworth States The Obvious remained cutting-edge to the end with a rant about estate agents. Rolling eyes

Caught a bit of the Angus Deayton panel show on at 11pm last night. Rubbish format, but Deayton's still very good as a host. Pity he's never really found a suitable vehicle since he was unceremoniously dumped from HIGNFY.

It'd be nice if it did as those early series were comedy gold.

I absolutely hate the new NewsFox feature. I cringe whenever I hear it. Every time they say Englandshire or equivalent I hear Jon Culshaw doing his sixth billionth impression of George Bush.

Agree totally. They need to move away from trying to be Dead Ringers, it just makes them sound embarrassing.

Turned it off after 10 minutes, the guy's material was too weak.

Deayton is still very funny, the master of that sort of sarcasm. I suppose he's been very influential on later comedians, although he's not widely lauded as a comedy great.

My listening this week;

Quite liked "It's Your Round" last night, first time I've caught it. Thought the banter between Rebecca Front and Miles Jupp was very funny.

I guess with a show format like that it very much depends on the guests but I thought Miles, Rebecca, Rick Wakeman and Andy Parsons were a pretty good mix last night.

On Wednesday I attempted to listen to "Showstopper" again, made it to about 5 minutes in and had to switch over, truly awful, like all the worst bits of "Who's Line is it Anyway?" (the songs) being performed by drama students. Sorry, hate to be negative but how on Earth did this get a 6.30pm slot on Radio 4?

Also have been catching "The Bob Servant Emails", very funny. Brian Cox, the actor not the dreamy Professor, is truly excellent and Felix Dexter is very funny playing the email scammers. It's only on for 15 minutes, which means that the jokes don't wear too thin (I think 30 mins would be far too long). Highly recommended.

I believe Rick Wakeman is doing a tour of some sort where he tells jokes (not his own, obviously) and trades on his "Grumpy Old Man" schtick, hence his reappearance on the scene.

Brian Gulliver's Travels is good. Poignant, too.

They could be using that slot for a new sitcom.

One set in an office where the computers aren't connected?

Yes, I've been enjoying the series so far as well. It certainly has some interesting ideas.

If you wanted to listen to examples of the very best radio sitcoms, and comedy narrative thingies that aren't exactly sitcoms, of the last few years, what would everyone suggest??

54 pages?! I've got better things to d-
Sorry, couldn't make it to the end of that sentance with a straight face.

Cheers for your help though!

Well, off top of head, I'd go for Ed Reardon's Week, Bleak Expectations, Cabin Pressure, Claire and the Community, and Party (I think it was called that, anyway, about a new political party, in which every episode was essentially a one act play - and very good it was).

Ta!

Looking through iTunes only Cabin Pressure stands out of the last few years. Best British sitcom on TV for me. (Digital, and all that.) Bleak Expectations is just behind it, but more so the original series which is now older than the last few years.

I liked some of Nick Mohammand's Bits, and Tom Allen's The Correspondent also sticks in the mind as being good.

There is probably more I am forgetting though in the haze of panel shows.

I think being a fan of comedy & Dr Who should enjoy Nebulous.
