One bit of confusion- was the 'handbag in the wrong set' thing a scripted gag or a mistake they felt work and left in?

I'm guessing here, but from the reaction of the actresses in the scene I think it was a continuity error which the actor decided to rectify and as it was funny they left it in.

Probably right - but there were several more instances of the fourth wall being smashed to pieces, so perhaps it's part of the show's overall madcap and anarchic feel?

2.6m watched last night, a pretty good start.

Unless I missed the n*****r and p**i jokes, how exactly is this non-pc?

I can't imagine constantly ridiculing a supposed 92 year old man and wishing he was dead in nearly every scene is that PC.

I think it was probably scripted. Showing the audience at the start and end and having the actors laughing when they should have been keeping a straight face seems to indicate there will be more of these type of things.

I looked at the trailers and thought, "oh, look, Les Dawson's Cissy character resurrected & Irish, so probably a bit Father Teddish, too."
I watched last night and I loved it. Yes, it was predictable and yes, there were a lot of familiar jokes in there. That's why I liked it.
Something to watch and laugh at without feeling the need for a degree in comic or social phsychology to try and figure out why it is meant to be funny.
I went to bed with a smile on my face which, after being divorced for two years, is an increasingly rare occurence! :D

It's not what I'd call particularly un-PC.

I suppose you're right but it's not exactly a light and fluffy family sitcom either.

Scripted I thought. The actresses reactions didn't ring true. It was still amusing though.

I've just seen the preview clip of this and I was most surprised. I found it be rather funny, which is not the normal case with most mainstream TV sitcoms these days.

I was so very, very wrong about the mainstream bit. Still it was alright I suppose - nothing to write home about when you watch the full episode, but still passable.

I forgot it was on. Had some urgent paint drying to do. Might watch next week if I'm not down the pub.

:| Very boring and predictive of 'Irish' humour, nothing new, if anything a throwback to the late 'Les Dawson', but not as good.
The writer/actor Brendon O'Carroll must be a hit in Ireland, it doesn't travel well. He is greedy wanting all the best lines, even stepping out of 'old lady' guise to achieve this at all costs, the subsequent 'suspension of belief' was then lost.
A tired mess, very dated 'frigging hell' does not compensate for dire script and 'Wink to camera' style of performance.
I hate it for everything.

I was never a fan of Brendan O'Carroll. I always feel he relies on crude humour way too much. Almost every Christmas he has a DVD for sale based on the Mrs. Brown character and the names of the DVDs are always a kind of rude pun like 'how's your snowballs' or 'how's your jolly roger' and then the boxset was called Mrs. Brown's Box. I've seen snippets of these DVDs and they are really not very good. This new series is certainly a big step up but it isn't my cup of tea. It's very much Inner-city Dublin humour and being a country bumpkin I don't really relate to it or like the style of humour.

I didn't actually notice that in the episode (must have been looking away), but there was an interview/thing I read that mentioned it: it was a genuine mistake that they decided to leave in.

It was a good piece of theatre, thought it was going to be bad from the trailers, but was very good.

A weird mix of the post modern and old school music hall.

Sort of an Irish Chuckle Brothers by Ionesco.

And I laughed when the thermometer went up grandad's bum.
