Swearing

Hi folks, I've just started writing a book of short stories about the music biz, but I'm really hung up on if I should use swearing in the text, and how much. I know it adds realism, but, not being a natural swearer myself, I'm finding it difficult. Any ******* views?

Regards, Gid.

Morning Gid, yes, I think if you set all the stories in 18th century Vienna then you wouldn't need the swearing...oh hang on, having seen Amadeus, I think you would. No, I don't think you'll be able to do it. Good luck.

Don't mention Plaistow Patricia.

Not advisable to use it in prose but ok if a character swears/dialogue.

Agreed.

Swearing for me has always been something to wrestle with.

In real life I swear like a trooper but I *hate* the way some use swear words in writing or stand-up comedy just to shock. My rule is as the others have said, if the character can be justified using the word then go for it, if not then avoid like the plague.

Too f**king right!

I see you had a little titwank there, soots :)

Laughing out loud

I agree with everyone else. Swearing within regular prose can be very jarring. I'm drawing a blank on the title of the piece, but the phrase "I shit you not" appears and it literally stops the story dead in its tracks.

Yeh soz but you're so cute when you're asleep

If I bought a book about the music biz and it wasn't wall-to-wall swearing I'd be highly dissapointed.
Novels are pretty well the last uncensored medium.
Blimmin' well go for it!

Thanks folks, I suppose it's a pretty global response that swearing's o.k. in dialogue, in fact in some cases it's expected. I'll steel myself to come up with the right ******* words.

Are they lyrics to a song you're writing Sooty?

Gid. Wave

Yeh Jusin Beiber's going to record it.

After he gives me a kiss, Justin's a girl isn't she?

i was disappointed to hear avril lavigne swearing in her records the same with lisa marie. I cringe even though I swear myself. I am trying not to... as a point of interest "p" "b" and "s" are in the king james bible. "f" and "c" aren't. I was going to do some comedy involving "king james and his filthy mouth... I'll get him with a bar of soap." but I didn't know if it would get me in trouble with the royals or not? he's been dead a long time! Sick
