Is there anybody listening...?

Fascinating looking at the What are you watching? and What are you listening to? threads, but with the audio visual media going digital, and so many new and specialised channels on offer, it has often occurred to me that even with 65 million or so inhabitants in these crowded isles, can all the hundreds of radio and TV stations possibly all have an audience 24 hours a day.

The various shopping channels never cease to amaze me. The amount of crap they continue to push out door 24/7! Surely we must be saturated with Egyptian cotton towels, sparkly naff bling, and cheapo watches. And yet if you happen to watch Bid Up, or similar, whatever time of day, the sales keep coming.

I usually listen to Classic Rock as music of choice but obviously every type of music is now catered for, and via the internet you're not just limited to UK stations, so that's got to be a diluting factor. ( Although you can argue the reverse for radio and say the whole world can find and listen to UK media if they wish. ) But when I scan the long lists of stations I always return to the same question.

At some point in time what are the odds of some DJ/presenter prattling on with not a soul watching or listening ... ?

I was once interviewed on a hospital radio station which boasted an average of 6 listeners. And I suspect that 5 out of those 6 were probably elderly patients with dementia.

That's one example where you feel sorry for all those volunteers who help out on hospital radio.

On the other hand, there are numerous professional presenters, who obviously think very highly of themselves, who deserve an audience of 0

Jeremy Spicer? Radio is one of the few mediums in the Australian media that hasn't gone completely dumb yet - although most commercial radio DJs are moronic tossers.

We're very fortunate to have lots of listener supported radio stations that are thriving, even with the state of our economy.

I do enjoy 97.1 The Drive in Chicago. I often start listening soon after 9:00 am UK time which means the very early hours Chicago time.
Not quite so many commercials.

I remember when I first discovered Planet Rock a few years ago and I won three prizes in their competitions so there couldn't have been that many listeners.

Well I imagine all media content will become as "On-Demand". But there will still be room for DJs to point us in the direction of new music. As with the other areas.

And old music. I'm still discovering and enjoying music from the last 70 years. There's a lot of good stuff out there and it's exciting to hear it for the first time.

My local radio station used to be called Galaxy FM (now renamed to Capital)
The morning program is called 'Hirstys daily dose' and it is always hillarious.
One of the DJ's used to do a feature called 'Danny dumps' where if you wanted to finish with your partner - Danny would do it for you live on air. It was sometimes very shocking and they have since been banned for doing it.

But here is one of the best ones; Enjoy

What would happen? Would the DJ be waiting there for someone to tune in before playing anything?

Of course. I meant new to a new audience. I listen to a lot more older music than anything released probably after 1999, when music went uber-shite.

Maybe? Or if the DJ was popular he'd appear in the download charts n what-not. I don't know, alright!
