The Bed Sitting Room

The post-apocalyptic comedy film The Bed Sitting Room has finally been released commercially.

For those who have not heard of the film, it is set after World War III ("The nuclear misunderstanding") a nuclear war which was also the shortest war in history, lasting 2 minutes and 28 seconds (including the signing of the peace treaty).

It deals with the lives of the roughly 20 sole survivors of the war, which are played by some of the great British comics and comic actors, including Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Arthur Lowe, Frank Thornton, Harry Secombe, Marty Feldman, and Spike Milligan, who also co-wrote the original play that the film was based on with John Antrobus.

I have just watched the film and I thought it was brilliant. It is certainly one of the forgotten treasures in British comedy. The ideas in it are typical Milligan. The bed sitting room in question is actual a man who mutates into one because of the nuclear radiation, there's another character who mutates into a cupboard, and the new monarch is Mrs Ethel Shroake of 393A High Street, Leytonstone. Wonderful film.

I bought the script book of The Bedsitting Room in a charity shop years ago when I was going through a big Spike Milligan period. Good book as far as I can remember.

It was a very good idea for a film, but it was overlong and the joke wore a bit thin. Some lovely ideas, such as Arthur Lowe and family living on a Tube train and the civil servant types (Cook & Moore) in a balloon urging people to "Keep Moving". It felt more like a collection of ideas, though, rather than a story. With a bit of work and a bit of money thrown at it, it would perhaps warrant a re-make. It's a very British darkly comic satire.

Recall seeing this as a kid and enjoying it, great turns from Ralph Richardson and Michael Hordern. But I suspect I might think it self-indulgent if I was to see it today.

I'm sure I saw this on stage with Spike in the early 60s ?

'God save Mrs Gladys Scroke, long live Mrs Gladys Scroke' springs to mind . . :)

Well, it was originally a play by Milligan and John Antrobus first performed in 1963, so you may well have done.

I just found this film online on YouTube a few days ago. It's amazing.

I think the reason why I like it so much is that the tone is so dark, yet also so lighthearted. Which was Spike's intention; that it would show that all the stupid things that we do are part of us, not our environment.

Plus all the actors are great, especially the ones known for being serious actors. Plus Arthur Lowe is always good.

This is on TPTV Saturday 10.45pm. World War III? The Nuclear misunderstanding? Sounds a bit too close to home to watch and enjoy at the moment.

Watched it many years ago, and from what I remember it was OK.........just that.

Thanks for the heads up Billy, I just set it to record. ? The cast and the premise make it seem very promising, but as opinions seem mixed I'll try not to set my sights too high.

Never seen it before but I'm watching it on TPTV now.

I can uderstand it's not everyone's cup of tea but interesting that Survivors seemed to take a few ideas from it.

Incidentally there seem to be 2 threads on this.

That could be a side effect of the radiation.

Well I watched it for a while but not really seeing where it was going (ie a story line) I turned off after an hour or so.
