Gender aside, no court or police officer would complain if you defended yourself against someone who slapped you (a slapper?) in this country. Domestic violence issues are a little trickier but you'd walk away if a stranger slapped you and there was video evidence to support your side of the story.
Well I think it would be a bit much if a drunk annoying, but small girl got punched full in the face by a large man.
Every incident should be taken on its individual merits.

Someone assaults you and you defend yourself. End of story as long as you're not talking about a 5-year-old kid doing the slapping.
Shouldn't be as cut and dried as that.
If I'm a huge muscular bloke and a little teenage girl slaps me lightly in the face, and I punch her, that's wrong. Might not be wrong by law in your country if you say so, but it's wrong in every other way. Lightly slap her back if you want. Or, more realistically, pick the silly cow up and put her in a different train carriage.
People must have some kind of self regulation/self imposed morals, rather than 'it's the law that I'm allowed to, so I'm going to go ahead and do it'?

Punch them anyway. They're only small adults after all.
The other day Michael Ball suggested that David Gray's version of Say Hello Wave Goodbye was superior to that of Marc Almonds. I nearly fell off my toadstool to be honest. As I remember Almonds is an aggressive 'get out of my life bitch' rant against his soon to be ex. Gray's is a whiney 'I've missed the point of this song'weak version at best.
So I listened to both on the tube and imo no contest.

How many people here would have punched her? Just asking.
Oh my God. That girl has issues. and I'm not sure, I could have sat there and let her scream like that at me.

It sounded like a fairly substantial slap.
Lightly slap her back if you want.
As far as the law is concerned, that's just as much an assault as punching her.
pick the silly cow up and put her in a different train carriage.
That's also assault and might even be construed as the much more serious crime of kidnapping.
My response would have gone something like this:
1) Cock my arm back.
2) Say, "If you touch me again I'm going to break your f**king nose."
3) Call the cops.
4) Laugh as she's hauled off to jail for assault and public intoxication.
5) Post the video to YouTube.

That doesn't mean it's the same thing in reality.

I don't think you know the British underclass that well, DaButt!

I guess not. The whole concept of tolerating public drunkenness is rather foreign to me. Nobody slaps anybody in this country unless they're ready for a full-on brawl.

I dare say that's the same the world over. And, equally the world over, there would be people who instead react in the way shown in that video.
Different people act in different ways.

Even if it's a man on a woman?
It's not exactly a common occurence. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen anyone get slapped in real life.
Anyway, what you said you'd do sounds okay to me, Dabutt.
