Stanza is a great book-reader app, if you're so inclined you can get pretty much any book you like free of charge (pm me or Google for a fuller explanation).
The IMDB app is a handy tool when you're thinking of watching a movie; I immediately disregard anything with under a 5.5 rating.
The Guardian app is the daddy for news, but you have to subscribe unless you download from the US app store (pm me, Google etc)
Peggle is probably my favourite game, but be warned it is addictive, I've often found myself wasting hours trying to crack one of the seemingly impossible challenges.
Shady puzzles and shift are also pleasing little time-wasters.
Local concerts is another handy app, it announces upcoming gigs for artists stored on your ipod.
