Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes Page 4

Gervais has been asked to host this for a third time, apparently.

Yes just heard this on the radio. Good.

I really like RG and think that a lot of people simply don't get him or some of his schtick. His 'arrogance' always strikes me as being completely tongue in cheek and never taking itself in slightest bit seriously.

Agreed.
Some people are determined to think it's all for real.

Should be interesting as he expressly said he wouldn't do another one.

Agreed Zooo.

But I just don't see how or why they do. You only have to look at his expression when he makes most of his so-called 'arrogant' comments. The eyes are constantly twinkling. It's a giveaway. The words that he says don't need to be interpreted literally. He's an actor and comedian and simply playing another part.

On the few occasions I've heard him interviewd when he's not 'on' he comes across as a very nice and generous bloke.

I know!
I suppose they must think it's a double bluff? Or something. It's very weird.

I don't care. Watching awards ceremonies isn't a big part of my life.

He hasn't turned it down yet I don't think but has said he probably will as he doesn't know what else he can bring to it.

Apparently the HFPA are saying they never invited Gervais to come back...

Americans can poke fun at themselves. Just watch the excellent Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert for example. Many actors, politicians and celebrities have appeared on their shows and they don't hold back. But not with the same humour.

Some Hollywood actors openly found it amusing but others did not. Bruce Willis told Gervais on stage 'Some people get very lucky in Hollywood, don't they Ricky.'And Tom Hanks and Tim Allen also took a swipe at him. Egos rattled? Yes. But considering Gervais' disappointing performances in his US film roles, maybe those roles will soon be drying up after this.

I know Americans can poke fun at themselves, I was talking about Hollywood which sometimes is too serious.

Interesting interview with RG on Steve Wright Radio 2 this afternoon; in particular where he talks about the Golden Globes performance in the second segment directly after the record.

Agreed.

Why wouldn't it be for real?

Why would anyone pretend to be arrogant?

Because it pisses people off and makes their heads explode with anger? Which can be quite amusing.

I don't know why, you'd have to ask him. I think it works well as a persona though.
