Far from it - Tesco's taxes and other corporations (and individuals taxes) pay for everything. The government has NO money of its (not even a penny) own - its raises revenues by taxation and borrowing - and by no other way. Check your facts.

Tesco pay for their stores - they employ people - who pay taxes too which fund everything else. They create wealth - the labour government consumed it by screwing the economy and expanding he state.

On the subject of fact checking, amusing that you should pick a company that is famous for avoiding tax, Wanker, through offshore holding companies and such imaginative schemes as leasing back it's own stores from companies it set up in the Cayman Islands, thereby avoiding corporation Tax.

Tesco also famously shelters it's profits in elaborate partner arrangements, pays no VAT on it's online sales by shipping its DVDs and CDs from the UK to Switzerland and back again, and is currently involved in a long and continuing investigation by the Office of Fair Trading.

Next time you wan't to paint a dreamy little homily about capitalism and the tax system you might think to include a company that makes at least a half-hearted attempt to fulfil it's tax duty.

Someone touched a little nerve, f**kwit?

Check your facts too - I didnt raise the subject of Tesco - Leevil did.

No different than any other large corporation. Its not illegal and doesn't mean that they pay NO tax. If you have a gripe then its the law that's wrong - not the company. In any event the 250,000 employees pay tax too.

I have never quite understood how retailers create wealth for a nation. Tesco's business model seems to rely on squeezing farmers, sourcing cheap imports and undercutting competitors with overheads like decent wages and UK taxes. None of which seems to me to be helping the UK economy.

Which I think rather makes Godot's point for him.

I have a friend who brews beer for a living. Waitrose sell his beers for about £2 a bottle. They pay him 4p per bottle.

Mugs. Tesco would have beaten him down to 3.

Well with respect Timbo, if you don't 'get' that you need to beef up on 'Economics for dummies'

Dont you think farmers etc make money? Of course they do - granted not as much as theyd like - rather like most people in their job. But they must make enough tomake it worth their time. Last time I checked, their staff received salaries each month too. Now let me think, I wonder what they do with that money?

Let's keep this thread civilised, please, guys.

And Juan, I don't advise taking on Godot, Stott tried it the other day and got completely battered.

With due respect you are a sad loser, and I can't be arsed.

Godot - if the phrase "Leave him, he's not worth it" has any meaning at all, it surely applies here. This guy lives for forum aggravation. Save yourself the bother.

4p? Well he's a jerk. He might as well stay in bed each day.

Forum aggravation Griff? Just because someone has an alternative opinion to yours about tree hugging? Grow up man.

No I very much mean what I say.

Guys, please, let's be civil. Name-calling is a pointless exercise.

I didn't 'start' on him and Godot never 'battered' me. Now don't be a shit stirrer.

I wish I could say I had sympathy for the trees but, frankly, I don't. For years trees have been lauding themselves as the "lungs of the planet" when - as a little bit of fact-checking will demonstrate - it is actually the algae which are doing most of the photosynthetic legwork.

Trees are disingenuous to say the least! Therefore, regretfully - and despite their good work with squirrels - they won't be getting my vote.

Unless you're the Sergeant Major calling the post-battle roll call in the film 'Zulu', when it's both useful - and poignant. :)

He did batter you, and I wasn't shit stirring, but anyway, moving on ... Rolling eyes

We seriously need to get a yawn emoticon thingy for your bullshit. Still, I'm sure you amuse yourself. At least, I hope you do.

I felt your hand try to brush my penis, is that what you meant?

Actually Tesco is quite different from most other large corporations and is still being investigated by the Office of Fair Trading as I said in my earlier post. Previous governments have moved a number of times to close Tax loopholes that they've exploited. To say that there is a culture of Tax avoidance at work in the company is to understate it by some margin. You might remember (or possibly fancy) the Tesco Heiress Shirley Porter of the 'Homes-for Votes' scandal at Westminster Council, from some years back. Sued for 27 million she sheltered her assets and claimed a personal fortune of just £300,000. 'Having a gripe' doesn't really cover an intelligent response to their monkeying with their financial liabilities.

Incidentally I don't care who brought up Tesco, I was responding to your heartfelt 'thinkpiece' about how Tesco kept us all warm and safe from harm with their tax munificence.
