Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes Page 3

A while back people were absolutely infatuated with him. All he had to do was walk on stage and talk. People were mesmerized by his accent. But I think the novelty has now worn off.

I assume his performance is a mixture of trying to be sharp and biting and trying to shoot himself in the foot since he has a lot of self hate, like most overly arrogant people.

It's interesting to see that he has been essentially copper-bottomed in America in the past which he may or may not be aware has worn off, Andrea.

Laughing out loud Well done Ricky. I doubt if even Wossy could've done that better. I love seeing the ones with senses of humour in the audience, taking it in the spirit it's meant to be, like Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and DeNiro, though clearly, some of them just aren't sure if they should laugh or look displeased with it, like Steve Bushemi. I think some of them actually fear for their careers if they're seen on TV to be laughing at the industry or Hollywood. Great fun enjoyed by many in the room, by the sounds of it.

Who gives a f**k?

RG would if loses a few film roles because of it.

Not sure he would really. Seems quite easy going. I think he's always said his success could disappear tomorrow, and that he'd be okay if it did.

Nah, he'll be fine.

absolutely brilliant - don't you just love seeing people squirm when they have no sense of humour? I have watched it loads of times and will watch it many more yet! To use a wonderful word of Winnie the Pooh - you can never be "uncheered" with Ricky Gervais!

Makes it much more interesting and is guaranteed to get a reaction, car-crash TV or not. I do think Gervais has become overplayed and most of his films are diabolical, but the opening monologue was very funny.

They wanted shocking, they got shocking.

The only bit that probably rankled the orgamisers was when he derided The Tourist. It was a ordinary at best, and had no place being nominated.

He did seem to mention that he had warned them! what can they expect - I think that the officials were ready for it - if not the audience!

He got a great reaction in the room, from what I saw.

Why was he off for an hour then?

Why was he off for an hour then?

He wasn't supposed to intro every presenter and had already picked out the ones he thought he had the best jokes for; which, because of the order, just meant there was a bit of a gap.

Ultimately it was just another tedious awards ceremony in which overpaid celebs slapped themselves on the back. And laughing at Ricky is the ultimate in self-congratulation: "Look at me, I'm such a great person I can laugh at myself! Ha-ha!"

Absolutely. When you break at 40 and are happy that the first thing you did might turn out to be the best, you are more or less untouchable. What are they going to threaten you with? Full marks to RG for using it to his advantage. I think this is the key to Extras series 2 - how it might have turned out.

Disagree that the material was weak. Some of the jokes were more for shocks than chuckles, but the Hugh Hefner 'lied about his age' gag was one of the best I've heard in ages.

Gervais has been asked to host this for a third time, apparently.
