Senile or crazy old woman character?

I've been trying to track down a British TV programme that my mother described to me, although she didn't know the name of it. She recalled it had a woman character who might have been senile, and I think a younger woman who came to work for her.

The programme was likely aired in the USA in the 1990s (although might have been broadcast earlier). My mother enjoyed watching Britcoms shown in the USA by PBS stations; some of her favourites were Keeping Up Appearances and To The Manor Born.

My mother passed away a few years ago, but as I was looking for something amusing and "gentle" to watch, thought I'd try to track down something else she enjoyed.

Thanks!

I think you might be talking about a show called Keeping Mum, which starred Stephanie Cole as a senile old lady.

The show was billed as a family comedy but caused quite a lot of controversy at the time.

I think it went out in about 1996 or 97 over here.

Keeping Mum is a possibility, but I'm not sure if it went to the US, as it was a remake/adaptation of an Australian series, Mother And Son.

Margo, are you familiar with Mulberry at all? A younger man went to work for an old lady; although not senile the character could well have been hazily remembered as such by a casual viewer.

It actually could be Mother and Son; it has aired on PBS.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions! They all sound interesting, and I will try to find what I can watch of them.

If I didn't imagine it (!), I also have a hazy memory of a program with an older, perhaps retired actress character (former theatrical star?), which might have been the same program as my mother was talking about.

Even if I'm thinking of something else than she described, I find elderly women as main characters much more intriguing than young women & girls most often featured in American-made products, so recommendations are welcome.

Thanks again!
