I guess it depends on what you want. I remember asking Holly Johnson of Frankie goes to Hollywood a question publicly and to my surprise he started following me - Lord knows why though.
Thing is, as we are now following each others account, it means we can send direct messages to each other. Every now and again I will ask him a question about his music or art and don't think he's not answered any of the dozen or so I've sent him.
As a fan there have been a lots of rumour and folklore about his career but I'm now able to clear up those questions simply by asking. In that respect it's quite neat because you can speak to people you might not normally get chance to.
A lot depends on how they use their account as to whether you can get followed back. As you only have 140 characters to play with I guess that the celebs know that getting into long and painful correspondence is far less likely.
