Frankie Boyle's Tramadol Nights Page 28
My article on the racism scandal and racism in comedy generally is online now if anyone cares to read.

I read it Nat, but I don't know... if people have so much of a political agenda that it transcends comedy.. without being funny of itself they shouldn't be doing comedy. It's smugness. Likewise philosophers who proselytise in drama without being dramatic. Write a play, write comedy, use the medium as it is.. that's what it is for.
I get what you're saying. I agree with you that if it's political before it's comedy then they're in the wrong game. Not really the point I was trying to make though.

Help me out Nat I am a little vodka'd to read it all again what was the main thrust?
Okay, I'll summarise the 1500 words:
Racism is bad.
Words themselves are not always bad.
It's the intent behind them which should be scrutinised.
Frankie Boyle's jokes weren't racist.
Censorship is not the answer.
I know nothing because I am white.
That's the basic gist.

Not seen the show but:
Racism is bad.
In context yes.
Words themselves are not always bad.
Sometimes they are. If you hold the above belief.
It's the intent behind them which should be scrutinised.
Scrutiny is not within the gift of an audience when responding emotionally to a joke.
Frankie Boyle's jokes weren't racist.
Don't know, never listened to him. Have no intention of doing so either.
Censorship is not the answer.
Yeah it is sometimes.
I know nothing because I am white.
Bollocks.
That's the basic gist.
Cheers

Well crikey you seem to have inspired my chum Dr Sardonicus to finally post something he was planning on writing a couple of weeks a go
Regardless of the vocabulary used, the jokes quoted in the latest articles are facile and unoriginal rubbish. Stripped of their use of the provocative words nigger and Paki, they are simply incredibly weak and predictable: the kind of lines you'd expect of a 6th former to include in his first ever "political" stand-up set - not the work of a 38 year old subversive comedy genius.
