For what?
I have been working on trying to make my website a little better.
I am by no means a designer - but could some of you lovely people have a look and let me know what you think. Especially on the home page.
Is it too busy?

It looks ok.
Need better colours to make it stand out more. Don't use black use dark greys for types. Also you need to GZIP the site so it loads fast. How come you're using a big image and not text? text is better for search engines and looks nicer rendered on the page.
Just a few thoughts.

Outfits. I'm falling massively behind and need to finish my Newman Christmas thing so need to Make Sara and finish her tonight/tomorrow AM. So I an start the new set of work and finish that before Friday. Did have her as Cat woman but it's not working so need ideas Christmas films stuff to put her as.
Thanks Gav.
I'll try changing the black. Any other thoughts on the colours?
I'm using a big image because it a Mr Site template thing website. Ie you type the stuff in a box like Word. The problem is that is so unflexiable. I know what you are saying about search engines - I'm not too fused about that with this one. As there is only one me.
Quote: Griff @ December 21 2010, 10:10 AM GMT@Bigfella - Gavin is right that text in images doesn't get indexed by search engines and you need to put it in the HTML. But there is much too much text on this page. Less is more. (As you know better than any of us.)
Thanks Griff. Do you recommend getting rid of some of the stuff on the picture like "603 pounds" or the main text. Or both?
It's a bit busy lots of words is distracting.
And arrow pointing to "witty comment" is excelent, if you're looking for a bit of Partridge irony.
And it's very blue.

I think it's too busy. Honest opinion.
Plus I expected the services to be hyperlinked down the right.

For your colours try this:
http://www.nickherman.com/colourmatch/
It is a chart of colours that work together and look quite nice in a layout, it's a good start. Does Mr Site allow editing the HTML?

Thanks Ellie. That was my "gut" ( ) thought.
Quote: Griff @ December 21 2010, 10:17 AM GMTProblem is there are about 20 messages on that page all squashed into a narrow central column, in a mix of fonts, sizes, colours and alignments. It's one step away from reverse flashing video.
Choose half a dozen key points and emphasise those. And show them all in a consistent typeface.
NB the "Where to Go Now" items should be hyperlinked. Preferably in a left hand column as navigation.
In fact Ellie's point about the right-hand column also stands. You only need each destination page to be mentioned once and hyperlinked once.
The left hand column also seems to be dead space.
(Appreciate that your Mr.Site package might not give you control over all these aspects).
Thanks Griff.
Yeah you're right I'm working under the confines of Mr Site - the left column just can't be used.

Thanks Gav, I'll have a lookie at that.
I don't think it does allow HTML editing. I do have Komposser so if it does that might something I could look at.

If you want I'll do it for you? Won't be today but I can have a look over next 3-4 days?
Quote: Griff @ December 21 2010, 10:17 AM GMTEllie's point about the right-hand column is equally true. You only need each destination page to be mentioned once and hyperlinked once.
\o/ I made a true point!
Griff has it right. Too much text at too many angles in too many fonts. What you want is a nice, clean site like the one in my signature
