Likewise with university education, most of it is a waste of time and money for all concerned.

In your case it probably was a waste.

No 'probably' about it.

Laughing out loud

Children in the UK spend about 13,000 hours at school.

Apart from reading, writing and basic arithmetic, what do they learn that they wouldn't learn in a school-less society?

It wouldn't take me many minutes to write down all I remember from those 13,000 (and more!) hours.

Hilarious. Without children attending school today there are some children who would never be talked to in a civil manner, never know what it is to be cared for, never read a book to an adult, never be read a story to, have a change of uniform from the clothes they've worn for the last three weeks, never eat breakfast or lunch.

And I haven't even started on the education bit.

I couldn't agree more. Admittedly though Roscoff, we could be a bit biased. :)

Little true Dickensian story for you all. A friend of mine teaches in a comp in a particularly run down part of Manchester. He runs a very successful orchestra on a Saturday morning. So popular is it that he now runs a junior and senior orchestra. Why is it successful? The first thing he and the head of department do is cook the kids breakfast. Not bacon and eggs, just toast and stuff. The trade off being that you must either be playing or learn to play a musical instrument.

Feed them and they will come.

I started quoting stuff to say I agreed with it, but then there was too much stuff to quote.

Great.

Now Mancunians can be beaten up, mugged and raped while the perpetrator's friends stand around in a circle providing musical accompaniment.

And they'll get an arts grant for it.

So does your Mancunian chum give Bez and Shaun Ryder toast then?

So does your Mancunian chum give Bez and Shaun Ryder a spit roast then?

Dunno if he's into that kind of thing really.

Prince Charles doesn't travel in a vehicle with bulletproof windows? That seems to be a serious lapse of security.

I've seen him walking around at a public event without any obvious bodyguards nearby, and I thought the same thing.

No amount of toast would make them musical.

I'm quite happy if someone knocks him off to be honest. As long as they do the same for the rest of the royals.

We haven't really got a tradition in this country of shooting or blowing up our leaders and heads of state, so Charlie boys quite safe.

Brighton Hotel, Ayrie Neve, Lord Mountbatten...

Chip hang your ignorant head in shame.

It's more than you're expected to face the threat of death rather than distance yourself from the people.

Churchill famously only had one body guard and Prince Harry served in Afghanistan.

Of course we don't have the same setup as the US where the president is an active part of the military command structure at all times.
