In many cases, hey? It's good that you've done a study into this so we have the figures to hand.

Matthew attempts unsuccessfully to deflect the killer blow to his argument.

Thus, I win.

Cute puppy, David.

Is it the star of a new cartoon series "Bathwater of the Dogs"?

See what I did there?

SFX: Ba-dum-tish!

If I ever meet Nat Wicks or Will Cam, I'll explain in person exactly why Jerf's script is funny.

It'll cost them a few drinks though.

Hey Veroniroodeye, you slip the nurses and I'll meet you in the electric shock therapy room.

nurses

I don't understand why any guy would date a nurse.

Surely part of dating's fun is that, at the end of the evening, the girl might say 'No'?

:D

Tony Cowards
I didn't ask for in-depth anything, just a 2min piece for me to study.
I'm sorry to trouble you. I'd still appreciate your comments on my posts

I also asked sootyj for one of her gags, something about herring, it stunk, or is that stank? but I will defend to my death her right and indeed all our inalienable right to be rubbish.

You know the real tragedy of sabotaged threads like this?

Every new or potential member must read them and ask themselves "Do I want to be funny on BCG or do I want to be popular?"

And that tragedy can be avoided only by our ceasing to attack each other and, if we post on Critique, by concentrating upon the work to be critiqued rather than upon the writer.

Have you ever seen me knocking Stotty or Bussell or Sooty on one of their threads?

Have you ever seen me knocking Stotty or Bussell or Sooty on anybody ELSE's thread?

I don't think so.

And isn't is strange that it's always the same few people who attack me for alleged 'trolling'?

The rank and file of BCG (and indeed some of its senior members) seem to find no faults in me that aren't present in many other people who go unattacked.

It's always the same few.

Always the same few.

And it's such a shame.

Ronnie, Shhhhhhhh. We talked about this!

ANYWHO, I don't think I ever said it wasn't funny, and in actuality I can see that it has been written with the intention of humour. What I did say is below:

I'm with Tony on this one. You need to understand where the laughs are, so you can decide whether there are enough.

The ideas are amusing, but if this is delivered in a straight style, it isn't set up in a way which is likely to work.

Regardless of whether or not you have an amusing idea or phrase or story, it has still got to be structured in a way which aids the joke. Simple things like knowing how to cut extra words out, and how to edit it to give the punchline as much chance as possible go a mile. These are things I learned before even trying to write my first set. It's really worth looking into joke theory- just a Google search will give you a lot of great advice. I think much of it is mentioned in the 'constructing your first 5' thread in performance discussion. Unless of course you don't want to use a conventional joke style and want to focus on a more 'performance orientated' style. In that case the humour just will not translate to the written word, and therefore critique is redundant.

Another great way to learn joke theory is pick some standup routines you like, and some of the best jokes from it. Write the joke down and highlight the 'set up' line. Highlight the punchline in a different colour. Look at how many words have been used which aren't highlighted, look at where the focal word sits within the punchline (usually the last word). You will find that while many comedians have wildly varying styles, the majority still use the same set of standard guidelines in constructing jokes.

I've had a look, but see no evidence of me knocking anyone in this thread. I'll try harder in the next one.

Always the same few.

And it's such a shame.

I've never agreed with you more.
And it's f**king tiresome.

So job done! Congrats to all involved.

Who are you telliing off there?

The one who seems to be trying their very best to spoil the board for everyone. (ie, not you.)

Me?

The only people I spoil are my miniature rapping dogs, featured in this months "Pug's Life"

Oh please don't, Matthew.

You and your friends might be convinced I have numerous IDs on this site but I'll be truly surprised if Aaron hasn't subjected the suspect IDs to analysis and come to the conclusion that the probability lies somewhere between remote and non-existent.

But that's exactly what I am trying to do. :(
I am failure.
