Hi does anyone remember a sitcom about characters in a TV sitcom? I remember the lead actor was basically ashamed of the popularity of the show - and in particular the catchphrase that he was always being asked to repeat. I can't for the life of me remember what it was - except that it got stronger and stronger and I think ran to 3 series? Cheers Simon
Forgotten show
Sounds like Extras, but I assume you'd remember Gervais so it must be something else.
Na, you're right, it has to be Extras, that is Extras to a tee, and if that conceit had been used before then Gervais would have been mullered for stealing ideas (again) and I don't recall such a kerfuffle. It was 5 or 6 years ago now, if the poster only glimpsed it whilst building an Airfix Lancaster bomber then I can imagine his/her memory would be sketchy.
Simon it's Extras. It ran to two series I think and it's well worth watching in its entirity!
Assuming it's not Extras, Simon, can you give us an idea of how old it might be? A couple of years? A couple of decades?
Thanks for your replies, I don't think it was Extras. I think it was about 10 years ago and it was a sit com within a sit com. The plot was around the cast of a very popular, low brow TV sit come - I think it was about a cleaning company or something like that. If I remember correctly the action was filmed in what looked a staff canteen (the camera was always face on) and an adjacent office to the left. The male lead had achieved national popularity for his role in the cleaning company sit com and loathed it. He hated being asked to repeat his catchphrase (which I can't remember either) when he was out in public. I remember a lot of conversations he had with his fellow cast members, that he wanted to do something more culturally rewarding, but the cast members basically telling him to keep his mouth shut and accept the popularity - and the money! No-one else I've spoken to can remember anything about the series, which raises the awful possibility that it's all an elborate dream, but I remember enjoying the series (I'm sure there were 3) so much! Regards Simon
Still sounds like Extras!
And you're sure it was a British sitcom?

Definitely sounds like Extras. Does this look familiar?
Thank you guys!
How stupid am I - it was Extras after all - I'd completely forgotten that "When the Whistle Blows" was in Extras - Dabutt's YouTube clip brought it all back!
Thanks again! Simon
Yay!
Never mind, they can be distracting, Lancaster bomber kits, you get enthralled with all the little bits like rotating gun turret and bomb undercarriage.
Whilst you're all being so helpful, can anyone remember the name of a British sitcom from the 1970s? It was set in a family-run hotel in ?Devon. All I remember about it was that the main character had a moustache and used to hit the waiter for no apparent reason. I think the main actor in it was the one from those Schweppes tonic water ads???!! Many thanks in advance.
>_<
I wonder if you could help me with something that's been bothering me all day. It may not be a sitcom (or a comedy series), but the absurity suggests it is. I remember watching something a few years ago (it could be off a sitcom I know and love for all I know), where a couple are getting married, the vicar or registrar is incredibly impatient, trying his best to rush the service. When it comes to the ring, he intervenes and hurts the woman's finger, leading to her shouting out in pain. It may have been someones dream in this show. It's been driving me mad all day.
