On The Buses movies are great

I'm into On The Buses at the moment.

I've just watched the three On The Buses movies. They are all good but I think the second two, Mutiny and Holiday, are the best and are excellent. I personally think the movies are better than the TV episodes. Holiday is great because it is sort of like On The Buses mixed with Hi-De-Hi!.

Some of the funniest films I've seen.

Also made me realise how many times Stan says, "I'll get the sack!". Must be a catchphrase.

Mum's Mantra: "Stan!!"
Stan's Mantra: "I'll get the sack!"
Arthur's Mantra: "You great fat lump!"
Olive's Mantra: "You pig!"
Inspector's Mantra: "I 'ate you Butler!"
Jack's Mantra: "'Ere comes 'Itler."

On The Buses is one of the most successful British sitcoms of all time and guess what? It was rejected by the BBC.

I'm highly suspicious of anyone who derides On The Buses.

People are entitled to like it or dislike it as they please but it entertained millions upon millions of normal everyday people of ALL ages - and you can't ask much more than that from a sitcom.

ON THE BUSES was watched by millions around the world, Holiday is my favourite of the 3 movies also. A comedy the whole family can watch together, no violence, swearing just harmless fun. Fellow passengers on a fun journey having a laugh. Fans will be coming together again in 2011 for another fan club event DING DING

Nostalgia Never goes out of fashion

Ah good, another sitcom fan club, I like those. Even if I don't join OTB's, you have reminded me to search for a couple of other sitcom fanclubs. I shall have a peek at yours too while I'm there. Morning.

'Nostalgia never goes out of fashion' I like that, that's good.

I also loved the movies and series.
It's always watchable even now.

I liked Arthur (Michael Robbins) as the pompus long suffering husband and every episode had intimations that he was useless in bed.

He was nearly the same character in an episode of The Good Life where he was the Rentakill-type man. Although he called himself something like an infestation management officer.
He was called Bullstrode in that episode and was proud that the Bullstodes had been in infestation for generations.
Great actor and On The Buses films and series were although sometimes corny very good.

I'm sure there must be other threads on this already.

It really wasn't a BBC type sitcom so good on them for rejecting it.

Basically it was two blokes laughing at their own single entendres.

There is for the sitcom, but people are talking about that here instead of the films :)

Yeah the films are very good, probably Holiday is my favourite too.

Probably because it wasn't produced by the BBC. It would have had a very different feel to it, had it been.

Yeah I'm not sure we'd have seen so much of the home scenes had the BBC had it, they are certainly my least favourite part of the show, and they went on a bit. Back then there was definitely a snobbish attitude at the BBC about what type of show to air, and they wanted their big rivals ITV to be seen as the 'low rent' or common or vulgar channel, something ITV excelled at for so long in fact. But OTB was still a winner.

Commercial TV is about giving the public what they want.

BBC TV is about giving them what they OUGHT to want.

In Buses, Reg Varney (looks-wise: a cross between Arthur Fowler and a 60-year-old Declan Donnelly) delivers arguably the greatest performance of his career.

A little surprised it didn't lead to bigger things in Hollywood.

Laughing out loud Laughing out loud Laughing out loud

Does anyone know if there are any surviving tapes of the Valiant Varneys?

AT the time I found it hilarious but I was only about 10 at the time.

Alas not, all are missing. :(

The films may have a certain nostalgic appeal, but they're pretty awful.
