Mark Gatiss's A History of Horror Page 2

I think the series was great and included choice clips. I'm sure they considered their options. I'm just saying that the clips were spoiler heavy, often a crucial scene near the climax. Take Rosemary's Baby for example. One of the brilliant things seeing that for the first time is the sense of mounting paranoia and the possibility that Rosemary is going nuts, but the clip basically told you she wasn't. isn't this likely to diminish the enjoyment of the first time viewer?

Oh well done badge, thanks for the History of Horror spoiler!! Sheesh.

Yes Japanese, I must admit I wasn't concentrating as much as I should but couldn't be bothered to replay it. The Excorcist apart, the scariest (good) horror ever for me was The Omen, great film. The slashers never did it for me, I don't really find them that scary because they are too predictable, although Halloween is a good film. Films like The Shining are far scarier imo.

:D I thought someone would say that! Actually, on a general point I think there is a modern trend of spoilerising which I put down to the me-society. The attitude seems to be it's your fault for not seeing the film yet so why shouldn't I spoil it for you? I blame Thatcher!

She dies in the end, by the way.

Thatcher never dies! :(

Hooray!

I totally agree, although (so far) I've managed to avoid any Inception spoilers.

Please don't take that as an invitation to tell me about it.

I'm still trying to avoid finding out how Lost and Battlestar Galactica end!

:D

Don't worry, I watched them both and have no idea. :D

I really enjoyed the series too. Gatiss is a rather poor and hammy actor IMHO and an inconsistent (at best) writer, but here he has found his niche. He was obviously genuinely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the topic, a rarity in TV nowadays, and his well-chosen interviewees seemed to respond to him warmly.

Surely that's a good thing for him though?

I rarely watch new horror movies now, they are us too infested with special effects for my liking, I prefer a good story myself. The Ring? appallingly incomprehansible and disjointed, like so many of them now. My favourite of recent years is Blair Witch.

Setting the bar real low bar for a back-of-a-fag packet horror flick check out Shrooms. Only frightening in the fact that the idiots who made this piece of crap actually got their film distributed.

For an original and genuinely eerie modern horror flick give 'Let the Right One In' a go. This has just been remade by Hollywood under the title of 'Let him in.'

In true Hollywood fashion the producers obviously decided that audiences would find it too difficult too remember five words in one go.

You're wrong about virtually everything, aren't you, Alfred?

Ring (the original Japanese version) is a great horror movie, with beautiful interior logic and an almost unbearable tension that builds and builds throughout the film. And then there's the strikingly original imagery, such as the terrifying way in which the woman comes through the TV screen. A classic.

And the American remake isn't too bad, either.

Which of the American Ring films is it with all the CGI deer attacking the car? Because that was well shit.

Oh, and this was a great series. Especially enjoyed the last episode.

The second one, I think. Although the Japanese sequel to Ring wasn't great either.

CGI has been the ruination of many a film. AHOH reminded us that the impalement of Patrick Troughton was done with an almost Blue Peter-esque way.
There is no substitute for imagination and sometimes having a small budget forces its makers to be more inventive.
