I did that with my PS2 and directly with Sony. They sent me a refurbished one the next day. Honestly it was years out of it's warranty.

I am so happy right now. Just taken my three year old, YLOD, 60GB PS3 back to HMV, quoted the Sales of Goods Act 1969, and received a replacement 250GB PS3 Slim back. 
I am over the moon.
Also in the box is a game (ModNation Racers) and a Dualshock controller. Bonus!
I've lost all my saved game data, but it's a small price to pay for a new, working, console.

The only downside is that the original PS3 was a design masterpiece and the slim-line console looks like it was made by the mud people. But I guess you don't care about that at the moment.

Playr only gave Fallout NV 5/10. Hrm. I bought God of War 3 today, and Dan got Just Cause 2.
Just Cause 2 was pretty good. The voice acting is hysterical!
