Stand Up sketch Page 5

This is not correct. If I remember rightly, you had written something that featured black characters and were informed by a producer that, in their opinion, your take on a black character was a stereotype. Maybe they were, maybe they weren't, I haven't read it, but that was the issue. Not the fact you were writing black characters, but the fact that you may or may not have written them in a very stereotypical manner.

I can assure you they weren't written in a stereotypical manner, in fact I changed Teejay to Steve and Leeroy to Vicky and only had to change she or he.
It's this PC that drives us all mad. As I have said I have black in the family and black friends. No racism about me but I still say David's so called jokes should not be aired these days. They are racist and insulting.

They are racist and insulting.

But that's the whole point.

(I'll just point out that the sketch itself does nothing for me personally)

That is the whole point, they attacked me for casting black. Hypocrites of the highest calibre or what?
There are loads of Jewish people in the beeb and I don't think they'd look kindly on such jokes. And with a name like Micheal Jacobs.........

Again, not my jokes. Besides, I think it's a matter of context and who the real victim of the joke is.

I was quite surprised at some of the reactions to this, and was wondering if that's how the Daily Mail started.

However I can understand the points made.
And it might work a bit better if, as suggested the jokes are a more generic parody of that type of gag.

How do you stop Paki drowning? punch him in the face
How many Blacks does it take to change a lightbulb.
Send em all home & give em a candle.
What's the differece between a Jew & a Muslim? not much, I hate the bloody lot of them.

Anyway
The sketch worked well enough for me, and the reactions would be the funniest bit.
But it's going to tread or cross a fine line however it's done

Thanks, Steve, some good suggestions. I think toning down the strength of the jokes in the way you've demonstrated is the way to go.

can I ask you how you would feel if you were muslim/jewish/black/Paki?
Paki in itself is insulting, whilst we 'whites' abbreviate, Pakistanis don't and it is insulting to them to shorten a name.

The sketch is supposed to be attacking those old school racist comedians! You're not meant to be approving or laughing at the racist gags!!

My Mother is a nasty piece of work, it's true.

Well no, it's the absolute intention.

Sorry, I came over all sootyj there.

*waits for sootyj to quote the above with the word "all" removed*

I think the discussion so far shows what a difficult job you have pulling off this sketch as you have written it, David. I'm a bit uncomfortable with it myself.

To me, a crap comedian who is decapitated by his own spinning bow tie would give you the same joke structure but without the dodgy racial element. You might argue that the crap comedian and the racist one don't deserve the same savaging but I think it could work just as well, structure-wise.

Whatever you say David, I will forever more look upon you as a racist

I don't know, I'm not really part of any groups that you'd get in trouble for insulting.
But I'd hope I'd still be able to tell the difference between malice & ignorance.
But at the very least tell when something is a parody or just trying to make a point.

I'll just have to learn to live with that.
