British Comedy Guide

Real name vs. nickname?

OK, so I'm new round here. Probably be asking for all sorts of advice and stuff once I've found my feet. But for now I wanted to canvass opinion from all you old timers on something I've just agonised for far too long over - should I continue to use my real name on these forums, or should I agonise a bit longer trying to come up with something clever/witty to use as a nickname?

Amanda x

Nickname.

You never know when you'll be interviewing for a job with a real prick.

I'm totally unemployable now, apparently.

(and welcome to the forum :))

Depends if you think you might say something a tad controversial about someone, and then might want to work with them at some point in the future...

:)

Afternoon Amanda. I cunningly use a username that looks like a real name.

That probably isn't very helpful. is it?

As Kevin says, it depends a lot on whether your employers are the sort who'll go Googling your name.

It's also down to the way you want to behave online - if you're planning on being a snide prick it's probably best to retain your anonimity, as industry people do drop in from time to time.

PS. I'm in no way implying you are a snide prick.

Use your real name. What harm can it do?

Bloody steel workers. :(

:D

Welcome. Why not be AmandaW.... it's orginal! ;)

Thanks all for the words of wisdom, though opinion seems to be divided at the moment. I like Ellie JP's idea - I see a pattern forming there, Ellie ;-) And thanks, David, for warning against being a snide prick - I'll do my best not to be! Something tells me though that I'll be back soon, having agonised for a while longer, with a swish new name like Sandy Steelfox or similar.

Actually...Sandy Steelfox...I might be onto something...back soon...x

There's always the chance someone will Google your name and find you on here. It's not an uncommon occurrence,

If you Google "Britain's biggest comedy talent" you'll find many postings by me but, just as you're about to type 'omedy talent', several other BCG members' names will appear as suggestions.

Ooh, Sandy Steelfox. Nice!

Not sure if you sound like a cartoon character or an '80s female cop. Either way: good.

...or a porn star.

As you say though, it's all good. :)

Awesome name!

Sandy Steelfox it is then. Pleased to meet you all...x

You'll be very popular here, Sandy.
