Hippies

Does anyone remember the BBC sitcom Hippies written by Arthur Mathews. It starred Simon Pegg, Sally Phillips, Julian Rhind-Tutt and Darren Boyd. I've seen clips on youtube and I thought it looked great. I would have put some clips up here but youtube isn't working with me at the moment. :( If you did watch it what was your opinion and would you like to see it on DVD. It had great writing and a great cast. Personally I think this sitcom is under-rated but they're my thoughts. So I've said my bit, now your turn. Did you like it and would you want it on DVD?

Saw some episodes on Paramount. Not great.

I loved it.
I vaguely remember it when it was actually on. I've seen it since and I still like it.

And Simon's hair is ace.

I don't know if I'd buy a dvd, because I've already 'got' it. But, you never know. Stick some good extras on and I'm yours!

i thought it was really enjoyable. nice setting, nice costumes, good gags and a great cast.

From what I remember it was an very enjoyable show and as you say it’s was one hell of a cast, would certainly like to see it again.

I really enjoyed it and I think it deserved a second series to iron out any kinks. My fondest memories of it was Simon Pegg visiting his parents and sitting on a very low chair at the dinner table. I'm surprised they haven't whipped it out on DVD to cash in on Pegg's growing status as our most succesful comedy actor.

Youtube's working again. I've got some clips here.

Kevin Eldon in's this one. Rejoice! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2tZIuMHITI

I remember it and it was very funny

Hippies was excellent - at its best it was up there with Father Ted in my opinion. It should have got a second series and I'd love to see a DVD release.

Nobody I know either liked it or has heard of it, but I thought it was great. Would like to see them again.

All of episode 4 has recently been put on youtube. They're in 3 parts but it's all here if want to watch it.

I thought Hippies was great I loved Julian Rhind-Tutt's character. Although I think that Sally Phillips was underused. One thing that confused me was why Graham Lineham, who co-created the show, did not co-write it too. The answer is probalby because he was writing Black Books, but then why did he not co write the second series of big train? Also, why didn't he co write the second or third series of black books? Maybe he had had enough of co writing tv shows and wanted to write by himself. After saying that, the second series of Black Books was 2001 and Big Train 2 was 2002, The IT Crowd wasn't until 2006. But, anyway the point I'm trying to make is - yes I liked Hippies and would probably buy the DVD if it were available.

I read him state in an interview that it was more his writing partner, arthur matthews, thing and that when it came to actually writing it he just wasnt really feeling it, so dropped out. As for why he stopped doing the other things, such as Black Books, I dont know; but it would be interesting to find out.

Recently saw episode 1 (at the time it was on, I only saw no's 2-6 which I really liked). Apparently, since the series finished, those involved said it was a weak episode to begin with and gave the critics some ammo. Tend to agree because it wasn't a particularly funny opener and not as strong as later shows.

Saying that, I saw episode 4 recently and wasn't bowled over by that either. Perhaps its not as good as I remember. :(

Maybe one of those shows that's very much "of its time"?
