Does anyone think when a comedian does an advert Page 4

To be fair the breweries have never suppressed evidence that drinking is damaging to the health.

A few years ago, many celebrities would only do ads that were broadcast outside their home country, as they didn't want to look like sell-outs.

Fortunately the Goons, John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Tom Baker, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore had no such delusions of artistic integrity. Is anyone here old enough to remember Pete and Dud's radio ads for Shower Fresh gel? The out-takes are quite fun:

Dud: "Does Shower Fresh make you more alluring to the women?"
Pete: "No they run screaming from the f**king shit."

Good point ...theyre just esssentially whores...as is anyone who does anything for money.

GB Shaw (to a fellow female dinner guest'would you sleep with a man for... for a million pounds?'
'Well,' she said, 'maybe for a million I would, yes. It would depend on the man'
'Would you do it with me for ten shillings?' said Bernard Shaw.
'Certainly not!' said the woman 'What do you take me for? A prostitute?'
'We've established that already,' said Bernard Shaw. 'We're just trying to fix your price now!'

We all prostitute ourselves for money, but there are degrees of it. And degrees of intimacy. Comedians are performers, they do in a real sense sell their bodies, though not usually in an intimate sense (thought they might be intimate with information, Lenny Bruce springs to mind there..)tom Baker once said he loved voice overs as the money in his pocket spoke to him, it said buy a drink. But he was addicted to drink (at the time) So a crack whore is in a similar situation, most comedians are not though and have to pick and choose just how intimate they want to be and just how personal it gets.

Beneath him?

Gervais (whilst I admire his work) is only a friggin comic!
How can much of anything be below a comic? (who is a basically a bufoon who makes people laugh). Gervais has made millions out of potraying bumbling losers - so how can he say - and really mean that?

Let's keep it real and not credit these people with too much glory and admiration.

In terms of writing work I think Gervais advertising to us would be beneath his standard.

I don't think anything is beneath him since his small, cringeworthy parts in Stardust and The Simpsons. Both were awful. He'll be advertising in 5 years when his money starts to run out.

Not that it makes any difference, but did he actually say it was 'beneath him', or is that just Buyon's words in the first post?

*shrug* I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah it does sound like something he might say. Just wondered though.

He said it on his radio show.Whether he was saying it in jest is debatable. Trey Parker has also stated he turned down loads of money for advertising saying people who do adverts are "fags" and would have to faace their family afterwards.

I love Trey Parker, he can say what he likes.

I thought he was really funny in Starlight. A bright spot in an otherwise ho-hum sort of a film.

I thought it was AWFUL. Was hugely cringeworthy. Not a good film though, except for DeNiro who was ace. Anyway, this isn't really relevant.

De Niro as always was pure ham, worse than Gervais. Apart from those two and the dreadful leading lady it was quite a decent film.

(I know it's not relevant, but it needed saying.)

Took me a while to figure out what you're talking about. It's star*dust*, people. And Gervais was ok in it, but it's basically a poor man's Princess Bride anyway.

Ah yes, you're right. Edited to make more sense :)
Princess Bride is great in many many ways.
