Okay I'll give you A Scanner Darkly. He's only really good at characters which are devoid of any emotion though.

I have! And Keanu is dreadful in it. However, the film itself is a right pile of old pretentious toss anyway, so doesn't count as a good film (imo).
Keanu also manages to be awful in the great Dangerous Liasons - doing Bill & Ted opposite the likes of John Malkovich and Glenn Close. Some might say that he was a young actor playing opposite great actors and therefore was bound to look bad. But no, Keanu could do the same scenes opposite Arthur Mullard & Sue Pollard - and still come across as the hopeless, wooden amateur.
And, if it's not already been said, Julian Sands can ruin any film...

I can certainly see how it would be pretentious to some. 
But I love it, and he is great in it.
Not as great as River, obviously.
