Terrible actors in good films Page 5

Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber were excellent at the time.

Yup. These days, his weakest films are the throwbacks to his early ones.

Colin Farrell in 'In Bruges'

He is fantastic in In Bruges!

How old were you at the time?

Tom Cruise in Goldmember.

*does thinking...*
About 14 I think.
Are you saying only kids liked them?
You could be right I suppose...

I know - I very didn't nearly watch it when I found out he was cast, but HAMISHFROMBRAVEHEART was, so I went for it.

That and Tigerland are the only films in which I can take him seriously. S.W.A.T did for him. He turns up in Crazy Heart too, with a ponytail.

Ah come on, Dumb and Dumber is ace now. When the other chap chucks the snow at the woman from a foot away - incredible looking slapstick.

Sylvester Stallone in Copland

Burt Reynolds in Deliverance

Lawrence Olivier in Marathon Man

Eddie Murphy in 48 Hours

Barbara Streisand in What's Up Doc?

And Boogie Nights! Which he hated, the big eejit.

Erm, sorry to moan, but how is it you lot have seen fit to change the thread from terrible actors to great actors? Angry And many of the films you've been suggesting could hardly be deemed good even allowing for some measure of subjectivity and adjusting generously for the fact that many of you were reared on a diet of pop culture trash. :)

Here's my attempt, however vain I fancy it may be, to get Mr Timbo's thread back on track - Hammer's (otherwise truly excellent) The Devil Rides Out was stilted somewhat by a wooden, nay tree trunk like performance from hopeless bit part actor Leon Green as the Duc De Richleu's trusty friend, Rex. Even Ross Kemp would have looked less tree like in the part.

Morning.

He was good in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, and a sterling Little John in his time.

Ah, Timbo of course I wasn't referencing you, you have have some store of knowledge of films made before Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves were around.

I don't agree with you on Butch Reynolds in Deliverance tho, that's a great performance full of manly vigour.

I am inclined to meet you halfway at least on Olivier in Marathon Man, I can't accept he was a terrible actor, no, but it was a very hammed up performance. That's the film where his famous off set put down of Hoffman's meticulous acting method comes from, so perhaps he was cajoled into giving us a little more just to bolden the distinction between his beloved classical style and the newish film method style of acting he abhored. The jarring clash of styles does make very entertaining viewing tho. Great film too.

As do others, we just like new films too.

So do I sir, I love Star Wars.

This thread's lost it! Most actors mentioned in it aren't bad by any stretch of the imagination.
