Writing Courses

I'm creating this thread to post any new writing courses I hear about that might be of interest. Feel free to append to this if you hear of any, or if you have attended a course and have feedback. Note: A full list of current courses can always be found here

Here's one that might be of interest to many on here:

Saturday 3rd November in London: Writing Your First Sketch. A six hour course in writing "Quickie" sketches with Tony Kirwood. A bargain at £18! See our courses page for more details.

I'll add a course that I went on last year which was brilliant. Although unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any new dates announced for it at the moment.

Even though it's animation based it covers storyboarding plots, developing characters, pitching a show to producers, everything. And it's great fun, even the role-plays which I was expecting to hate.

Or alternatively he might announce courses he runs at other venues on his website.

Thanks for that info ShoePie - if anyone else has attended any courses do let us know your thoughts.

OK, here's a really relevant course to tell you about with a special discount...

Writing For Comedy With Dave Cohen

Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th December 2007 in London. It's being run by the prestigious Raindance organisation.

It's a fairly unique course and I'd say is ideally suited to a lot of our members - quite a lot of the emphasis is on selling your scripts and making a career out of comedy, rather than, for example, how to write your first comedy script (which is the level a lot of courses work at).

More Info: http://www.raindance.co.uk/site/index.php?id=17,40,0,0,1,0

We've secured a 10% discount - when you send in the form, mention you are a BSG member for the reduced rate. Note: You need to have been a member of this site since at least the start of the month to take advantage of this discount - they'll be checking with us.

Another discount for our members...

10% off Sally Holloway's courses in Hastings. She is running a joke writing course in January and a stand-up course in April. See www.comedycourses.biz for more info.

Hastings is a bit out of the way, but from what I hear her stand-up course is particularly good and worth trying to get to. The course ends with a stand-up show, a great way of testing out that new material.

She is running a stand-up course in April.

Might come in handy because sometimes I have difficulty.

I've just found out about a sitcom writing course our Welsh visitors might be interested in. It's at Cardiff Uni and the next run starts on the 23rd Jan.

For more info, as normal, see our Courses Page

lucky Cardiff

You wouldn't say THAT if you lived there, BushBaby. :P

I only went there a couple of times, I did like it but that's some years ago, maybe it's changed

Anyone know of any in the Manchester area?

Anyone know of any in the Manchester area?

You clearly didn't read the course page linked to above did you?!? :P If you had you'd know Jenny Roche runs courses at Manchester Uni. :)

I've pinned this, I think it's of a continuous use and if updated it should prove quite the resource for new and experienced writers.

For anyone living up North (like me!!) there is a Northern Screenwriters Conference on 4th and 5th of March at Cineworld in Middlesbrough. Confirmed speakers include Jimmy McGovern, The Street, Cracker. Danny Broclehurst, Sorted, Shameless, and Lisa Holdsworth, New Tricks, Waterloo Road. The topic this year is 'Who get hired and why'.The conference will consist of, case studies, workshops and seminars. Tickets are £40 if you buy before 31 January and £50 after that. Times are 9.00am 'til 10.15pm (yes thats PM) on 4th and 9.00 'til 5.00 on the 5th. Further info at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/nsc.

Another new course for the list: Tony Kirwood's Grotesque Comedy on the 29th March and 5th April. This one is a bit different than the others you might have been on.

As always, see our courses page for more details.

Cheers Mark. Will maybe check some London ones out. :D
