It's how I spell my name everywhere. It's Irish. The proper version has an acute accent over the 'a'- Micheál. I thank you.

It's very cute Micheal I have always thought that too.

OK, I've been thinking about this for a while and still unclear.
Should I write something with characters from different backgrounds? Like black people and white people? But who's to say this is diverse? If they're all from London then there isn't much difference between a black person and a white person. Or should I write something with cultural differences like religion or Middle Eastern mixed with White British? But then isn't this bordering on offensive? And what is diverse anyway?
In other words, this contest is driving me looney!
To back up my point on the offensive issue, just look at some of posts on this very topic here. One guy makes a passing joke about a race and it is taken as racist.
This is just an example but it highlights how people will react to jokes highlighting different races/ideas.

This is exactly what I am not understanding either. The only answer would be a writing team of mixed races, otherwise I can't see how it can work without being accused of racism.
I could write one based on my own family but would it only be acceptable if written by the non-whites/ non-Christian members?
My husband for instance jokes about his lot and my lot but it is a joke but wouldn't be accepted in this comp I shouldn't think.
Or is it that the comp is wanting a 'minority' writer only; to write about their culture only.

Bush sweetie it is perfectly possible to be black and racist, Muslim and Islamophobic or gay and a member of the conservative party with a fetish for sodomising assisstants in travel lodges.
What ever the number of ethnic minorities in your woodshed. Does not stop some of your remarks about minorities being ignorant to the point of unpleasant. And at times highly bitter.
I haven't got a BBC comission either. But I know that's more because I don't work hard enough, ain't good enough or weren't lucky.
Sootyj old bean, with the above post you are doing exactly what you are accusing me of but being judgmental and rude

Leave it out, Sooty. I haven't read anything by Bushbaby that's been particularly offensive. I think you have to realise that she's from an older generation to most people here, and they express themselves differently in regards to minorities than we do. My parents and surviving grandparents aren't racist but regularly use terms and phraseology that I might not. Don't be such a zealot, it doesn't help anyone.

So good he posted it twice...
I think a good, recent 'interesting representation of multi-cultural Britain' in the shape of a dark comedy/comedy drama was Grease Monkeys on BBC Three. I just hope they're not looking for another All About Me. Which I suspect they are, seeing as they want to speak to a "broad audience".
That's all I have to say on the issue. I can't enter because the BBC seem to think that all employees, even ones on casual contracts that work nowhere near London, cannot enter competitions as they will inevitably hack into the mainframe, infiltrate the system, steal important competition information and use it to their advantage. Which is only fifty percent true.

Just looking for good scripts, without preconceptions.

Thanks Chipolata, I was beginning to despair.

True, but they're alive now, not in the past, so should move with the bleeding times!

Good writers have a little quality known as empathy.
Get yourself some, Stott! Your scripts might improve!

This has no relation to the point I just made! That people should consider their words on subjects like this before splurging them out onto a public forum!

Maybe Stott's chosen to empathise with the minorities? Probably more the mindset to adopt for a writing initiative like this.
