I was down to do the Funny Women comp two years ago but wearing a brace to sort out my goofy teeth meant I couldn't take part, unless it was with a bad lisp. :)

You should definitely give it another go then. It would be great to have the BCG representing with you and AngieBaby on the line up.

I'm normally not one for affirmative action, but comedy is a bit of boys club and the female comedians I've seen on the telly have been pretty piss poor.

Who knows, I might even change my overtly sexist views on the topic?

Nah, to be honest I don;t really like the idea of separate male and female comedy.

I agree.

If nothing else, it's terribly patronising to the women: "You can't have any success when compared to men. You have to be split up and judged separately."

Hi Dolly

It would have been great to see you there though! And Angie next time.

I understand why some people dislike the idea of separating men and women in comedy but I disagree in this instance. I don't think it's patronising. I think it's a reality that in a lot of comedy clubs a man can go out there and and at least be listened to for a while before he's heckled to distraction while a women knows she may be going out to yet another request to "Show as your..." and various other witticisms.

I know everyone in stand up needs to develop a thick skin but I've no doubt a lot of potentially good female stand ups are put off by this kind of reaction.

I'm not suggesting they should always be separate at all, but if it's an extra incentive and confidence building for some, while they're starting out, I think it's a good thing. Hopefully one or two at least, will go on to bigger things now.

It was also very entertaining. Male and female stand ups are very different and I'd never say one is better than the other but having seen a lot of male acts now, this was a great chance for me to see a few of the women in one go.

I'd also say the audience for this show was a 50/50 split male to female. It wasn't women making jokes for women at all.

And in the interests of fairness if there's a male equivalent I'd be happy to watch that too!

ps Aaron yes I do read the front page and your emails which are great. We were only messing with Mr C!

I didn't realise RC was *that* old!

Dan

I have gigged with 4 of the finalists Tania Edwards being my favourite to watch.

I'm sorry to say that I wholeheartly agree with the Chortle review of Eve Webster having seen her a few times it was straight into impressions with no jokes, talented no doubt - funny no.

Great that Miss London won it after less than a year performing look forward to seeing her perform.

Rachel Anderson should have been there.

Out of interest, has anyone entered this year?

I completed the application form in March, got an email from the organiser asking me if I had suggestions as to where they should advertise, I obviously suggested the BCG, and have heard nothing since!

The application form requires your name, date of birth and a photo, but you are not required to provide video evidence of your stand-up.

I can only assume the reason they never emailed again is:
a) They didn't like my name
b) I am too old / young
c) I am too pretty / ugly
d) I never signed up for any of their workshops / womens days / festivals

I think this too. I've just never found female stand up comedians as funny if I'm honest!

You, on the other hand are hilarious!

It's just my opinion! Im female btw, I just prefer male stand ups. Im sure im not the only one.

Royston, you're female, in that case I forgive you! *air kiss*

You are not the only one, I too prefer male stand-ups. But I think women can be funny, and need encouragement, and I thought this award was a step in the right direction. You know, affirmative action, and all that.

My point was the the Nivea Funny Women's awards is a pile of shite. How can they run a comedy award based on name, age and photo? It's totally against everything they claim to stand for.

I can only assume when they saw my real age, and the airbrushed photo I sent in they realised that Nivea's products could never made a women look so good.

That is a bloody good point!
