British Comedy Guide

Autumn / Winter Season 2007

OK, we're about to start the autumn / winter season so I thought I'd briefly run-down what the new comedies that can be found in the weekly schedule...

MONDAY

- And Then You Die (Dave, 10:20pm)
- Live at the Apollo (BBC1, 10:40pm)

TUESDAY

- Dawn French's More Boys Who Do Comedy (BBC4, 9pm. Rpt Wed + Sat)
- Flight of the Conchords (BBC4, 9:30pm. Rpt Sat)
- The History of the World Backwards (BBC4, 10pm. Rpt Wed, Sat, Sun, Mon)

WEDNESDAY

No new comedy but Man Stroke Woman and Charlie Brooker continue their terrestial debuts (BBC2, 11:20pm) and Red Dwarf and Bottom are on Dave (9pm)

THURSDAY

- Sold (ITV1, 9pm)
- Never Mind the Buzzcocks (BBC2, 9pm)
- Lead Balloon (BBC2, 9:30pm. Rpt Sat BBC4)
- The Graham Norton Show (BBC2, 10pm. Rpt Sunday)
- Mighty Boosh (BBC3, 10:30pm. Rpt online and Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon and Wed)
- The Late Edition (BBC4, 10:30pm. Rpt Fri, Sun and Mon)
- Comedy Shuffle (BBC3, 11pm. Rpt Fri, Sat, Sun)

Also of note: American sitcoms Californication and 30 Rock on Channel Five and E4's night of comedy which includes repeats of Scrubs, My Name is Earl, Russell Brand's Ponderland and the 2007 Comedy Showcases.

FRIDAY

- Green, Green Grass (BBC1, 8:30pm)
- Have I Got News For You (BBC1, 9pm. Rpt Sat and Mon)
- Armstrong and Miller Show (BBC1, 9:30pm)
- QI (BBC2, 10pm)
- Katy Brand's Big Ass Show (ITV2, 10pm. Rpt Sat, Sun, Wed and Fri)
- Jonathan Ross (BBC1, 10:35pm. Rpt Sunday)
- Angelo's (Five, 11pm. Rpt Paramount)
- Totally Viral (Dave, 11pm)

Note: this Friday 16th the schedules are up the creek because of Children in Need. As a result the normal shows are not on but instead CiN takes over BBC1 and C4 has a repeat of the 50 Greatest Comedy Sketches.

From next week on C4 has a varied schedule. Comedy Showcase: Kevin Bishop* and Jimmy Carr Live are on the 23rd November, then the week after Max and Paddy gets a repeat.

* My prediction is The Kevin Bishop Show is going to be a hit - featuring 42 sketches in 23 minutes, C4 are so impressed with the pilot they've already given the green light for a full series even though us the public haven't seen it yet.

SATURDAY

- The Omid Djalili Show (BBC1, 9:30pm)
- Have I Got A Little Bit More News For You (BBC2, 8:50pm)

SUNDAY

- Tittybangbang (BBC3, 10pm. Rpt Mon, Fri, Sat)
- Graham Norton Un-Cut (BB2, 11:30pm)

There's obviously lots of comedy repeats throughout the week too - especially on Dave, BBC3 and ITV3 - their repeats includes Little Britain, QI, HIGNFY, I'm Alan Partridge, Red Dwarf, Bottom, Harry Enfield and Chums, The Fast Show, Absolute Power, Coupling, Two Pints, Karen Taylor, Alistair McGowan, Pranks Galore, The Smoking Room and Rising Damp to name but a few.

What channel is Smoking Room on?
Or should I actually get off my arse and look myself.

Yes.

Who is on at the apollo?

All in all I'd say that doesn't sound like a bad schedule at all. The one criticism I'd make is that it seems like all of the broadcasters feel that comedy should be shown almost exclusively on Friday nights. That's nothing compared with the fact that the BBC are showing a big budget drama starring David Walliams on BBC2 at the same time as a big budget drama starring Rob Brydon on BBC1 tomorrow but that's another story.

Just to add to the CiN point, QI is still on, at the normal time and on the normal channel, but it is a special.

Personally, I'm just annoyed, as it means even less opportunity to go to the gym. :P

Do you think they'll come on to Gary Numan's Cars?

Live at the Apollo should be good. There's some real top stand-up acts lined up for that. I'm also particularly looking forward to Lee Mack and Frankie Boyle's routines... but probably not for the same reasons as zooo.

The Omid Djalili Show could be good too. I've not seen a proper preview of that yet though so not quite sure yet.

Do! I think that's going to be one of the highlights over the next couple of months.

I've just uploaded show, episode and character guides to the website for Angelo's. Do check out our area for the show to get a better idea of what the show is about - Our Guide to Angelo's

I love Simon Farnaby!
And Alice Lowe.
Yay.

Michael McIntyre, Stephen K Amos

*shudders*

Amos is alright, but totally agree about McIntyre. Amusing perhaps, but his voice makes me want to die, and his face is probably THE most smackable in British comedy to date.

Shame to see no Reginald D Hunter though.

Amos I used to like, but I'm sick of hearing his opinions in a none stand-up setting. You're black and gay, we get it!
