(Of course ladies can write funny though; one currently writes the best sitcom on TV)
Quote: Col Jenkins @ August 10 2010, 3:28 PM BSTI think this is a truly wonderful piece. I don't think it's a sitcom though. I think we're in for a shock if you believe some of the reviews. I think it may well be the best piece of British TV in some time. The Hugo Blick link is a clue I think. I'm a Beckett fan (as well as a Molina fan) and I think a lot of people have missed the point with their "boring" comments. It's in the wrong time slot. You have to really listen. It's what's going on underneath the dialogue that gives you all the clues. And I thought the inverting of the guarantee business was genius. The ball she said she'd take into the shop - sheer brilliance. Will definitely watch again. Though there's something about it that makes me think "sitcom" is the wrong title.
Your post has certainly has persuaded me to watch this again. I'm not getting it so far and didn't even smile but it's unlikely an actor of Molina's calibre didn't fly home to make any old piece of tat.
Quite. Wasn't exactly concentrating on it last week but I could still tell it was a quality product. Next episode I'll give it closer attention.
I've just stared watching it and it had the feel of something else from ages ago.
"The House That Jack Built" with Duggie Brown and Sharon Duce. Does anyone else remember it?
Call me old-fashioned but, in the same way I like my food to fill me up, I prefer my comedy to make me laugh - at least smirk.
No way is this a 'sitcom'. It's just a 'sit'.
It's for the highbrow brigade - akin to the Emperor's new clothes.
Unfortunatley for me, there is less and less funny comedy about these days - even though theres more comedy on TV than ever.
A lot of self indulgent mediocre un-funny material. I found it very hard work. Ok some good writing in parts but Dawn French is/was too hammy for me.
If it's not funny - it isn't comedy - and therefore not a sitcom.
Call it something else - it may gain more credibility that way.
Why complicate a simple concept such as making people laugh?
Not sure what genre Roger & Val should come under - but sitcom ain't it!
The last 10 minutes or so, after they started having the fake arguments, picked up a bit.

Is that the one with Adam Faith?
Maybe the genre is 'not very funny sitcoms'?
Like Alfred J Kipper, I too thought it was a quality production.
Extremely low quality.

Same title, different series.
In case I didn't say, this week's episode was dull as ditchwater. And the speed in which they made up from their arguments, before becoming angry again, was too quick. Didn't even have that element of realism that was (just) lurking previously.
