very obviously written by women I am afraid to say. Such a shame

Why would you say obviously written by women like it was a bad thing ?

ANYWAY. I enjoyed this, but not as a comedy. It was very nicely scripted, shot and well acted, but it was pretty light on the laughs. It had a subtle humour which I thought was nice, but seemed like it only had JUST enough to class itself as a comedy, rather than a drama.

I'll probably watch again.

I liked parts of it. I loved it when she suddenly started talking about the woman she knew who always had the right coat.

That's the bit I remember as being standout funny, but that's probably because it rings true to me.

I think it was a that point I realised that this was written by women for women.

Dunno- My boyfriend found that bit funny too for the same reason that he recognised the trait in me. Similarly, a lot of the stuff that Roger did I liked because it was things I identified from my own relationship (dispite the 20odd year age difference).

I am a bloody woman so how can I be sexist. I meant very feminine through & through. :P

Chicks can't write funny; there may be no actual proof for that, but it is a fact.

*Runs away as fast as possible*

I only kind of half watched this as I was busy, but it looked okay.

Thought is actually contained some of the sharpest (if not guffaw-inducing) writing I've heard in some considerable time. May be to a minority of people's taste, but it did what it set out to do extremely well.

I think this is a truly wonderful piece. I don't think it's a sitcom though. I think we're in for a shock if you believe some of the reviews. I think it may well be the best piece of British TV in some time. The Hugo Blick link is a clue I think. I'm a Beckett fan (as well as a Molina fan) and I think a lot of people have missed the point with their "boring" comments. It's in the wrong time slot. You have to really listen. It's what's going on underneath the dialogue that gives you all the clues. And I thought the inverting of the guarantee business was genius. The ball she said she'd take into the shop - sheer brilliance. Will definitely watch again. Though there's something about it that makes me think "sitcom" is the wrong title.

I am going to fight you. Prepare for pain.

I'm not a big fan of the female condition as a general rule- most of us are shit- but I will eternally defend the fact that women can be funny! Just because women have less inclination towards humour, doesn't mean we can't do it. The best example I can think of is Malcolm In The Middle- one of the best written sitcoms of all times IMO, which is written by a woman.

Also I realise you were kidding and were probably not expecting me to go on at you, but hey! I'm a woman, what can you expect?

:D

I think you've hit the nail on the head!

It felt like Pinter at one point to. Very intentionally and intricately constructed.

I mentioned earler in the thread that I thought this would be like the Caroline Aherne comedy Dossa and Joe, about an oldish Australian couple. And I think increasingly it is in that it's getting some rave reviews but I can not imagine it getting much of an audience at all. And it's very badly scheduled. It should be on BBC4, not BBC2.

It is on BBC4 - on Saturday evenings. But it feels more like it should be on Mondays or Tuesdays. Friday nights are not the best night for something clearly original and boundary pushing. I remain convinced we're in for a surprise with this. Also I found it funny. More in a Curb way - you don't have to split your sides to find it witty.

Curb is continuously laugh out loud, to me anyway.

And Curb's got pace. This hasn't.

Curb is also in no way gentle; I'll be surprised if Dawn French utters a phrase like 'Carwash C**t' in any forthcoming episode. :D
