Episode 2 does feel like it belongs to a completely different series.

I missed Lestrade and his team in 2. I enjoy their interations at the crime scenes. So the graffiti kid and the homeless girl in 3 are like the modern Baker street irregulars?

Ooh, I LOVED the fight scene in the planetarium. So dramatic and yummy. Gatiss is ace.

Yes, and so weird, with that giant assasin, like something from a horror story, or Bond's Jaws.

The final 10 minutes were awful. I thought up at least half a dozen scenarios which were more convincing than this.

Laughing out loud I'm sure you did.

It was a really nice bit of weird Victoriana, like the show was getting a bit of confidence in it's self.

Yes.

I did not like the torture porn aspect especially the gruesome murder of the old lady. "Well" I can imagine the producer saying "she didn't have long to go anyhow."

What was gruesome about it?

I imagine this episode surprised those who dislike the Who episodes Gatiss has so far written.

Thanks Cheese now you made feel like a bumhole just for liking this episode.

I suspect though I may be Pete Tong (see what I did there!) they have one eye on a certain country just across that there Atlantic Ocean.

It's a US co-production.

Like, her being blown up and taking out the whole side of a tower block, killing many more. Also the child's voice counting down seemed very poor taste.

Yes, it's fine fictionally killing middle aged people, but oldies and kids is beyond the pale!

No one ever looks out for the poor middle aged people. :(

You may recall (read back) I expressed distaste at the entire torture porn nature of it, but the old lady was the only one actually killed.
The kiddy voice seemed to me a cheap trick to rachet up tension.

Perhaps Andy pandy would be more your speed??

It's a detective show in which they investigate mysteries and murders.

Well of course having a child's voice that last time would rack up the tension and add a different element; what's wrong with that? It's called drama.

Excellent episode, much better than last week's. Don't think it was just the writer's fault last week's seemed to drag, though. The direction was a little flat. Did it have a different director?

Bit unsure about Moriarty, though. I was expecting him to be more...together. He was a bit too unhinged to be completely menacing for me. He was wearing a natty suit, though.

Nice to see Rupert Graves return!

Last week's did, yes.

I think you'll find there have been a large number of detective programmes which did not feel the need to stoop to cheap tricks such as literally strapping bombs to innocent people in an attempt to generate excitement among the viewers. I don't recall Conan-Doyle ever resorting to that or Columbo for that matter!

According to an interview with Gatiss, the series was supposed to originally be six half hour episodes.

Christ. No.
