Grandma's House - Series 1 Page 6

Do you have facts and figures to back this statement up?

Within The Arts as a whole, and specifically within the BBC this is very common knowledge. I'll be astounded if the official payroll fact and figures did not confirm this sociological 'imbalance'.

Alfred are you saying that the reason the BBC haven't commissioned your sitcoms is because you're not gay or Jewish?

At last the light dawns.

It reminds me of that Chegwin line in Extras, 'Is the BBC still run by queers and jews?' Seemingly it is. Run by and for them.

This is where you started your argument. You quoted a from a line from a character obviously drawn as being predjudiced and embittered. Then you agreed with him. Now you're taking umbrage that you're being identifed as predjudiced and embittered.

If you wanted it bad enough you'd f**k a dude. Obviously you're just not a team player.

Others DO or pretend to, it's already become a BBC injoke that some are pretending to be gay and overcamping it just to get in - I am not kidding!

Yes, because this is indeed the view of many struggling outsiders who cannot get in. The whole series was really an insider joke about how hard it is for struggling amateurs to get in TV. The quote I used was Gervais's near the bone attempt to sum up how some eternally nonsuccessful people, or once successful hasbeens (Chegwin) may feel, being pushed back outside or to the fringes by the 'mob' for failing, in their own opinion to simply be one of them ie. Jew or gay. The line was a BBC injoke.

'Extras' was always intended to have a double meaning. Gervais got away with a fairlly scathing satire on BBC managment and this is why the critics loved it so much. It ain't rocket science.

Did you ever think that maybe the reason no one wants to make your script is less to do with your race or sexuality than it is you being a weird crank who comes across like a marginally more coherent Mel Gibson?

No, I definitely think it's the former. 'Swhy I'm writing my current sitcom about a screaming gay orthodox jew from Stamford Hill. And I am using my BCG nom de plum this time, which will make me seem like both, to a BBC bod. I expect nothing but success this time.

Dear God.

For 'other' work to be considered is fine, no prob, but to be given automatic preference over better crafted, more genuine and more suitable material from an outsider and unknown is plainly wrong

And how do you know that it has been? Have you, unlike the rest of us, seen more than a brief trailer for this series and KNOW that it's crap? And do you work for the BBC, and have been disappointed at all of the excellent scripts you've read being turned down in favour of this?

And don't forget Tony Hancock was playing a fictional version of himself over 50 years ago.

I find Amstell consistently funny as a 'cheeky TV presenter.' Looks like he's writing about what you know and a lot mothers and grandparents say enough daft stuff to easily fill a six part sit-com.

Rebecca Front sounds like she's angling for a long running BT ad campaign.

Anyway, when did you say it is on? I need to get out my TV barrier, I don't want the thing getting kicked in again.

Haven't seen it, but did Lead Balloon follow that premise?

Similar, but no.

Come on, Kipper, you know you're going to watch it, just to piss yourself off even more!

Isn't it about time you wrote this week's column, Richard, instead of pissing about on here?

Laughing out loud

Hi is it true that Geoffrey Hutchings died a while ago? Presumably this is one of the last things he appeared in. I thought he was great even in Benidorm so hope this will be a good last outing for him.
