Goodnight Sweetheart - let's try to bring it back Page 3

Today I finished watching every episode of Goodnight Sweetheart. It was a sound send off. The only thing I'm not too sure about is was there ever an attempt on the life of Clement Atlee? If not, why did Gary prevent an assasination on someone who never was victim of an assasination attempt?

If there was a real one then we would already know who had saved him in real life therefore making that part of the story innacurate an making Gary unable to be the person who saved him.

I know it was about a time travelling bigamist and not exactly realistic but it got it's historical facts more or less spot on without changing them to suit the show (apart from having Gary live in the same building as Noel Coward or Jack The Ripper getting ran over in the 1990s).

They added fictional events in to suit the show but always (more or less) kept the real history accurate.

But they never caught JTR, so we don't know that it didn't happen!

I know I know, hence my bit where I said they added in things to suit the show.

Like duurrrr :)

But you highlighted that as something that they'd changed! :P

It was a good, strong show with an interesting idea at the heart of it. I love those shows that have a "What If?" core. In this case it was "What if you could travel backwards in time and have an affair without the missus knowing?" :) Well not exactly but that was certainly a big element. Nick Lyndhurst played Sparrow perfectly. I doubt whether anyone less-likeable could have got away with playing a time-travelling philanderer.

A weird story, I remember staying at a friend's house in the nineties - he was (and is) a devout Catholic and he'd been talking about the dangers of sin and lack of moral values in popular culture. (A fun night that was!) Then he put Goodnight Sweetheart on, and afterwards said how nice it was to watch such a family-oriented show. I pointed out the whole adultery theme and he genuinely hadn't thought about it.

Anyroad. What was the question again?

In Catholicism the central concept is that belief can not be more powerful than understanding. So for Gary Sparrow to view himself as 2 entities in 2 separate worlds carrying out monogamous relationships with the intent of marriage. Wouldn't neccasairly be viewed as a sin.

But of course I think he was his own granddad wasn't he? Or something like that.

I don't think that was his view Sooty, he was just a bit dim. Laughing out loud

What ever happened to accurate theological comedy eh?

Er no!

OK - maybe I was confusing it with something else. (Life on Mars maybe?)

Likewise Noel Coward in his flat. That could have happened. Gary could have moved in the same flat as Noel Coward. Yet how did Gary's presence lead to a Clement Atlee assasination?

Why did all the Beatles songs get forgotten though?
