I'm constantly shocked that anyone pays quite so much attention to what critics say. I guess a lot of people do themselves great disservices. How depressing.

Ideally, a critic should be able to guide us towards things we might enjoy, and as such, they should be able to provide us with a good service. Regrettably, all too often they choose to avoid a reasoned critique, and instead attempt to entertain us with their prose.

Rev is almost completely unlike Dibley in tone. The similarities are utterly superficial.

Not depressing at all. There are a cajillion new TV shows, plays, films and books a year demanding our attention. Reviews often help you filter what you're going to spend your limited time and money on. However, rather than basing your decision on a single review it's best to see what the consensus amongst a number of reviewers is.

I can sometimes have really weird (NOT BAD) taste so I've learned not to listen to critics. I would have missed a lot of my favourite shows/films if I took any notice of them.

That's great if you've got infinite time and money to watch, read and listen to EVERY SINGLE THING that comes out!

There's a difference between providing a critique - reasoned or not - and a reader, listener or viewer happily and gullibly accepting it word-for-word as some kind of self-evident gospel, reflective of the opinion that they too will doubtless hold should they watch a single moment of said programme.
