It started off, despite the lack of Roy, Moss, and IT-related subject matter, jokes, or office settings, quite well. But Richmond in the dock, boring. Just ... dull. Until it got to that bit I was tempted to say that it was surprisingly good, and question why the series has been so massively varied in quality.
I thought it was pretty good all the way through - except for the ending.
I've spent far too much time on here and in my own mindtank analysing the shortcomings and strengths of Linehan's writing to go back into it, but this episode had masses of positives. It contained some good satire, effective characterisation (the wife), original and unexpected gags and didn't bend the characters out of shape- Moss being sued by his mother seems much more likely than half the things that have happened to to him in this series. Linehan even managed to be get a few good and unexpected laughs out of the courtroom scene, which are usually comedy death.
A much better end to the series than last year's execrable calendar geeks which sort of dribbled away. Mind you this ended a bit abruptly.
Production notes/trivia:
1. Get Jen some new clothes. She's worn that bastard grey waistcoat in practically every episode of the last two series.
2. Doesn't milk look weird on TV? Seeing it cloud those wine glasses made me realise we never see on the screen.
3. The courtroom scene was a screened insert rather than a live set - hear the audience gasp when the first shot of Richmond appears.
