If we want to have a generation of bright kids who'll pay the taxes for our pensions we need to invest in the next generation.

Isn't that obvious?

And lay off the queen she doesn't cost much and we need a head of state.

And frankly the rich will buggers off if we tax them? That's a risk I'm happy to take. If they do we can always cut tax again

They do, and we don't. They should stuff her and put on display in the palace. Bring loads more money in.

And you'll whine then too.

These days the rich are mostly corporate yesmen who would be lucky to find jobs paying half as well abroad. Tax them until they squeal I say.

Let's cut the Houses of Parliament and keep the Monarchy.

It'd be better to not pay the underclasses at all. Just give them the bare essentials, provided by the state, with the money saved from wages.

I don't know why we all can't just accept that Britain is completely f**ked and start saving for our retirement in Italy or some other nice chav-free place.

Defeatist attitude. Nothing is unfixable.

You stay here and fix it, I'm off! :P

Well no I won't but I may moan.

Obvioulsy it's better to have billionaires paying some tax then no tax. I just think people aren't going to be so swift to yank their kids out of school to go to some miserable tax haven. And we can try taxing them more.

In Norway and Sweden where there's a topnotch quality of life. The wealthy don't mind paying high taxes to maintain it,

I say tax the poor at the highest percentage though. Give them incentive to be less poor.

Because it isn't.

It's in pretty good nick comparatively. We just need less goodies for a little while and a more realistic quality of life.

Well that doesn't work. Unless you want whole communities descending into lethal criminal no go zones and no one to pay the bills in the future.

It's not my job to fix the shit heap. If I was paid I would :P

The poor old bat is almost broke and hasn't had a pay raise in years.

I'd say slash the civil list.

Good. Performance based pay is working then.

She has to watch the royal variety performance, tlak to Dave Cameron and drink tea with people on council estates.

All jobs I wouldn't want to do for any amount of money

She also had to meet Barrack and Sarkozy. Without grabbing either by the ears and they're foreigns

Consider this, there are a billion children across the world living in poverty, which tends to suggest that people have kids regardless of their finances. Therefore I think your scheme would create more poverty, and all the money you saved in taxes, you'd have to spend on barbed wire fences and guard dogs to keep out the starving underclasses.

It's a damn good job the ball (when I missed it..) has run across the floor and under the sideboard! I think you have a good Sixth Form Common Room debating point going there! We have stopped the evil perpetrator of the plan to axe child benefit payments and as a direct result prevented the inevitable decline into chaos! A starving, marauding underclass would otherwise be marching through the school gates, as we speak!

Well done, Nogget minor! :)

<round of weak applause and a titter from a couple of the girls>

Some of us would agree that we would like a society where all the young have opportunity to learn and grow up in a decent environment. After all, we can't all have Middle Class mummies and daddies to pay for potties trimmed with chrome!

I don't think arbitrarily handing out Child Benefit payments to all mothers is the way to do it though, as it's not working well enough to give us that society we are talking about.

I think there must be a better way to create a fairer opportunity for all children. We won't find it by just keeping the status quo. But they can't all grow up to be brain surgeons, we need a range of jobs to be available so that all these children who deserve a decent chance in life can ultimately pay for all our pensions. Mmm, not sure why all that money I've paid into the system all my life isn't available to pay for my pension, something went wrong there then.

But where are these jobs going to come from? There would appear to be a hell of a lot of young people who seem to be unemployable in the current job market.

Perhaps we can just pay them to stay at home, eh?

Ah, Job Seekers allowance, now then..

..but if we cut that I guess that marauding underclass will be upon us once again..

I'm too thick to know what to do. <cut and paste this last comment and post something to my disadvantage, that may help>

:( <waiting for tirade from Sooty>
