Although answering any criticism with "You're bitter" is just the kind of thing Linehan would say!

I was joking, but there we go. You labelling him as desperate was just an oddly personal thing to say. And calling him desperate isn't a crit of the work, it's a crit of the man.

Quote: Jinky @ July 12 2010, 10:24 AM BST

saying that Linehan is thin-skinned (based on his comments on the internet) is a fact.

Quite possibly, I wasn't actually disputing the fact he's thin skinned.

As I said though, did he contact the creators of these 'bad films' directly and tell them they were rubbish? No, so it's different. If he gets narked when strangers tell him his works rubbish, fair enough.

That isn't really a direct comparison, is it?

Did the makers of the 'bad films' set up twitter accounts and blogs and state the the 'internet is great, isn't it?' before throwing a hissy fit when people started 'tweeting' and 'posting' things they didn't want to hear?

For somebody who has written a successful comedy about computers, it's quite touching that Linehan doesn't seem to understand how the internet actually works!

Anyway, he really ought to go back to writing in partnership again. He needs someone to offer a counterpoint to what he does. And that doesn't include asking rabid fanboys to act like some kind of human thesaurus!

I was commenting on the fact that he appeared to be using twitter to beg his fanbase to think of different words for 'bum' to help him complete some last minute re-writes.

That made him sound desperate. I'm not saying he's desperate on a daily basis!

(Though recent 'plots' suggest otherwise......)

On the thin skinned question - which he is - has anybody tweeted him about this series being a bit poor yet?

You're the one who put it up as a comparison in an earlier post, and my point was the same as yours, it's not a direct comparison! :D

Maybe I'm wrong but is this about more than Linehan being a bit snippy to his fanbase? Are the people getting bent out of shape annoyed because they heard Linehan was taking submissions and their (superior) writing didn't get featured? I ask this as a serious question because after all, this isn't Star Wars is it? Why are folk taking this so personally?

*Agrees*

Enjoyed ep. 3 quite a bit. So I did.

You're just repeating the 'anyone who criticises Linehan must be bitter' argument.

If, like several posters on this thread, you think The IT Crowd Series 4 is wonderful then it's no surprise that criticism of Linehan must seem bewildering.

But if you happen to think (as I do) that The IT Crowd has taken a turn for the worse then it's fun to speculate on the reasons. One of the reasons could be that Linehan has nobody to tell him when he's wrong anymore. There are no checks and balances on what he writes.

A much simpler reason could be that he's never written a 4th series before and has burned himself out. He should have 'done a Gervais' and quit after 12 episodes, while the going was good.

Of course, there's still 3 episodes left and they could all turn out to be comedy gold....so the Jury's still out on this one.

I've not even seen the new series. My question was why are people getting this angry over a sitcom? It strikes me there are things in the world more worthy of getting upset about. It's the sheer level of your ire that makes me wonder if you feel personally slighted by Linehan somehow.

Who on here made that argument?

The only thing I've said was in regards to the notion that Linehan has a thin skin; my respose being, 'so?'

Obviously. I assume until all poverty is eradicated you will never get annoyed about anything. Ever.

In fact, shouldn't we all delete our accounts on this site and head off to join 'War on Want'? Laughing out loud

And I have no idea why you think criticism = anger, bitterness or whatever. It's possible for negative opinions about something to be relatively objective, you know. If you think "This sitcom isn't very good anymore" = "I personally hate Linehan because he did something to me" then I'm sorry, I can't help you. One tip, though, you might want to actually watch some of the episodes in order to fully take part in the discussion!

(You aren't Linehan in disguise, are you?)

Hmmm, that's not really what you said, is it, but anyway. Linehan doesn't like strangers telling him his work is poor; fair enough, we can agree on that.

To carry on this dispute would be to muddy my point about the argument being unworthy of so much focus, so I'll politely let you get on with it.

Yes. Although I did post earlier that he doesn't even like people saying "I love all your stuff except one episode"!

The poor guy...he's had a lot of deserved success and he still seems to get hurt so easily. He needs a big hug.

But still, that 'spaceology' stuff was toe-curling....
